Two intensive care units opened and filled up in past 2 days

With Malta seeing an influx of COVID-19 cases, having just reached the 510 mark, Mater Dei has opened 2 new ITUS in the past 2 days. The third one ITU opened today brings up the total to 5 in operation, as patients fill up the wards and healthcare workers struggle to deal with all those needing critical care. Times of Malta confirmed that the unit was opened up for use on Tuesday.

Sources from the healthcare system told Times of Malta that the ITUS cannot run by themselves and it requires specialised workers. With other patients suffering from other conditions needing critical care, the influx of patients is weighing heavily on the workers. The Association of Anaesthetists of Malta also claimed that the fifth ITU was practically filled up after just opening.

Malta Union of Teachers convening over COVID-19 spread

Given the rise of COVID-19 cases, with Malta registering 510 as of 10th March, the Malta Union of Teachers will be convening a council meeting this evening to pinpoint the next action required. During a press conference at midday, an industrial dispute with the government was registered by the union as the virus and the variant was spreading faster and cases increasing.

MUT president Marco Bonnici stated that the situation Malta finds itself in requires a complete change in regards to svictim to the variant and the vaccination programme for educators still has a long way to go. The MUT expressed its concern as cases seem to be increasing rather than diminishing, calling for further measures to mitigate it.

BREAKING: Cabinet called for urgent meeting

Inside sources have claimed that the Cabinet of Malta has just been called for an urgent meeting, following the official announcement of 510 new COVID-19 cases which is the highest-ever amount of new cases registered in Malta.

It is unclear whether or not the meeting is with regards to Malta’s current COVID-19 situation but with daily case reports consistently hitting record highs and few measures announced recently, all signs point towards that.

Long queues at University of Malta for vaccinations

This morning, The University of Malta saw long queues amassing to get vaccinations. Photo was posted to FaceBook, showing a long queue of people waiting for their jab turn. Malta has just overcome the 100,000 vaccines administered yesterday, but COVID-19 cases are still on the rise despite the the new measures being implemented such as the closing down of restaurants.

Malta has just registered 510 new COVID-19 cases as of 10th March, with 361 recoveries. Health Minister Chris Fearne has emphasised the role of the vaccine as being the main offence against the virus, even with the new UK variant being more susceptible to spreading.
