Two days of rain and storms forecasted

According to weather forecasts, the first two days of this week are expected to have rainfall as a thunderstorm surrounds the island.

According to It-Temp Madwarna, an anticyclone is persistent close to Ireland and the UK whilst a different desert weather system covers most of Libya.

This is set to create two days of rain, wind and even storms in the Mediterranean. The weather is expected to get better by Wednesday, but not much summer sunlight is being expected.

The Malta International Airport Forecast issued a yellow warning over strong winds, with temperatures forecasted to feel like 23 or 24 degrees Celsius for the two days.

Thursday is expected to be fair weather, getting mainly cloudy as the next weekend begins. Temperatures are set to increase later on in the week to feel like 30 degrees Celsius at certain points.

13th National Animal Rights Day celebrated in Valletta

On Sunday 4th June at 6 PM in Valletta, Animal Liberation Malta activists and local Animal lovers gathered to join thousands around the world to commemorate the 13th National Animal Rights Day, in events held in over 150 major cities worldwide.

The NARD celebration consisted of two parts: a memorial ceremony and a celebration. The memorial ceremony commemorated the billions of Animals who die every year by human hands, often in the presence of some of the actual victims.

‘If these animals could freely talk’, said the activists in a statement, ‘their cries would come from every farm, slaughterhouse, meat market, testing lab, breeding factory, fishing pond, hunting ground, circus, zoo, religious temple, pet store, city shelter, restaurant, and dinner table in every home on every street.’

The Declaration of Animal Rights, a 100-foot-long scroll, was unveiled, proclaimed and signed during the event.

Live music, poetry reading and speeches were performed at the ceremony after the activists started the event with a march along Republic Street holding banners and a white coffin symbolising the innocence of the victims.

800,000 population by 2040, Finance Minister warns

Speaking during a conference, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana warned that the population of the Mediterranean island will grow to 800,000 by 2040 if the economy is to keep growing at its current rate.

Caruana was speaking during the Malta Institute of Accountants’ biennial conference, titled ‘Rethink and Reform’, urging an overhaul of the economic model if Malta wishes to remain competitive.

The population increase prediction by the Minister would see a 55% boom given that the current population stands at around 520,000.

He went on to ask conference delegates to consider what the ramifications of such an increase could be on the local infrastructure, environmental impact and resource use.

The warnings prompted a response by Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, who said that the Maltese population could become a minority due to the country’s current economic model.

He made reference to the island have the lowest birth rate in the EU, which would mean that the population would grow by bringing in more foreign workers.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic officially retires from football

41 year old football legend of his own right Zlatan Ibrahimovic has officially announced his retirement from the sport.

The AC Milan Striker revealed that he has decided to end his career on the San Siri pitch following the club’s final game of the Serie A season.

The Swedish player got emotional as Milan fans held up a large Tifo spelling out ‘GODBYE’, before being given a guard of honour by his teammates as he left the pitch.

Ibrahimovic’s contract expires at the end of June, having already announced that he will not be renewing it following various injuries.

Speaking at full-time, the player said that he has so many memories and has lived so many emotions. ‘The first time I arrived her you gave me happiness. The second time love.’

He went on thank his second family (the players), the head coach and his staff, as well as the fans. ‘You welcomed me with open arms’ he told the latter, ‘you made me feel at home.’
