Maltese athletics celebrated a landmark achievement on Saturday as sprinter Beppe Grillo shattered a long-standing national record during the Balkan Athletics Championships in Turkey. Grillo completed his initial 100m race in 10.47 seconds (+0.2), surpassing Kevin Moore’s 2014 record of 10.49 seconds.

Grillo’s outstanding performance continued in the final, where he finished third with an impressive time of 10.23 seconds. However, due to an assisting wind of +2.7, this time will not count as a new national record.
Grillo also contributed to another record-breaking feat as part of Malta’s men’s relay team. Alongside Luke Bezzina, Graham Pellegrini, and Jacob El Aida Chaffey, the team set a new national record in the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.57 seconds.

This surpassed the previous record of 40.63 seconds set in 2005 by Jeandre Mallia, Rachid Chouhal, Mario Bonello, and Darren Gilford during the GSSE in Andorra.
