Tributes Pour In After Passing Of 17-Year-Old Ayrton Ellul

Members of the local community are taking to social media on Wednesday afternoon to bid farewell to 17-year-old Ayrton Ellul following the tragic news of his passing.

Members of Parliament Omar Farrugia and Julia Farrugia Portelli were amongst the many to share the sombre news, with Farrugia calling Ellul “an intelligent boy, with a quiet character”, sharing that he last spoke to him during the feast of St. Mary.

“Rest in Peace Ayrton Ellul. How harsh it is to leave this earth at 17 years old”, Farrugia Portelli wrote alongside a photo of the young man.

Band Club ‘Socjeta’ Santa Marija u Banda Re Gorg V, Mqabba (Malta)’ also expressed condolences to Ayrton, a former member and trumpet player within the Mqabba community.

Malta Daily would like to express its condolences to Ellul’s family and friends.

RIP Ayrton.

PN MP Highlights Over 60's Lack Of Access To Social Work Help

PN MP Ivan Bartolo took to social media to discuss the worrying situation in relation to social workers when it comes to those aged 60 and over.

Bartolo explained how he had encountered a 60 year old elderly man with a disability who had walked out of Mater Dei with a torn pair of sandals and a bottle of water and without a roof over his head.

Social workers are obliged to, when following the regulations, reach out to individuals when this happens. However, this does not cover those over the age of 60. 

Bartolo said that this should not be this case and, were it not for his team, this man was out on the road. 

Bartolo revealed he discussed with the YMCA, which revealed that this situation is not an individual case. They specified how, in Ħamrun, a drop in centre takes in around 40 individuals due to this situation. 

Bartolo contrasted the situation with what former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat had said, that everyone became ‘a small rich person’ and that the poor have been lifted from their situation.

Should There Be A Capping On Comino Visitors

A video uploaded to ‘Are You Being Served? (Malta & Gozo) Original’ has reignited the conversation surrounding the potential capping on the amount of people who visit Comino.

The video shows a massive crowd on Comino, with the island having been the centre of various controversies in recent years due to deckchairs, visitors and even waste management.

The majority of the response echoed this sentiment of Comino having lost its once peaceful state due to its commercialisation.

Preparations For EuroPride 2023 Pick Up Pace

With almost just two weeks left for EuroPride Valletta 2023, the preparations for the cultural programmes, conferences and pride march are well underway. 

Thousands have already booked their attendance for many of the activities, among them the concert by Christina Augilera, which will take place at Fosos Floriana on the 16th of September. 

Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality Rebecca Buttigieg visited an international exhibition being held at Spazju Kreattiv on the occasion of EuroPride. 

The exhibition, with the theme of ‘Wind blows waves… in all directions’, brings together the work of 25 artists and activists from Malta and ten other Mediterranean countries around the challenges faced by the LGBTIQ+ community.

Parliamentary Secretary Buttigieg exclaimed that this exhibition is an artistic mirror for the community’s aspirations throughout time to achieve equality and respect. 

She added how Malta should be a model for other European countries where the rights of the community are not yet achieved. ‘Malta will show how hard it worked to fight for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community during the 29th edition of EuroPride’, said Buttigieg.
