A 46-year-old Gozitan woman, MaryAnne Cutajar, tragically lost her life in a bizarre incident on a Melbourne freeway. Cutajar, who had moved to Australia 30 years ago and had just visited her homeland last month, was killed when a ramp detached from a truck and struck her vehicle.
The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 4pm on the Western Ring Road. The white truck, traveling towards Altona, lost its ramp, which flew into the Greensborough-bound lanes and hit Cutajar’s car near the Furlong Road exit in St Albans.
Authorities are searching for the driver of the truck, who fled the scene.
Police have urged anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Inspector Craig McEvoy also appealed directly to the driver, asking them to check their vehicle, suggesting that they may have been unaware of the incident.
The ramp that fell is believed to be a Riv-Nail Driver system, a piece of specialized equipment used in industries such as mining and manufacturing.
Cutajar’s sister, Antonella, posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, asking for prayers for MaryAnne and her family during this devastating time.
