Tributes For Gozitan Woman Tragically Killed In Melbourne Freeway

Nov 8 2024 Share

A 46-year-old Gozitan woman, MaryAnne Cutajar, tragically lost her life in a bizarre incident on a Melbourne freeway. Cutajar, who had moved to Australia 30 years ago and had just visited her homeland last month, was killed when a ramp detached from a truck and struck her vehicle.

The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 4pm on the Western Ring Road. The white truck, traveling towards Altona, lost its ramp, which flew into the Greensborough-bound lanes and hit Cutajar’s car near the Furlong Road exit in St Albans.

Authorities are searching for the driver of the truck, who fled the scene.

Police have urged anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Inspector Craig McEvoy also appealed directly to the driver, asking them to check their vehicle, suggesting that they may have been unaware of the incident.

The ramp that fell is believed to be a Riv-Nail Driver system, a piece of specialized equipment used in industries such as mining and manufacturing.

Cutajar’s sister, Antonella, posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, asking for prayers for MaryAnne and her family during this devastating time.

Scientists Reproduce Scents Through AI

Scientists Reproduce Scents Through AI

Osmo, a digital olfaction company, has made a breakthrough in “Scent Teleportation” using AI to analyse and reproduce scents remotely without human intervention.

By collecting scent data through a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS), Osmo transmits this information to a molecular printer that synthesises the chemicals to recreate the scent. Previously, this process required human involvement at every stage, but Osmo has now automated it using AI.

The AI maps the scent onto Osmo’s Principal Odor Map (POM), a database that predicts molecular combinations corresponding to specific smells. The AI can then instruct a robotic system to replicate the scent.

The first successful scent digitisation involved a fresh summer plum, which Osmo CEO Alex Wiltschko described as an exciting achievement.

This advancement allows Osmo to process vast amounts of scent data with higher accuracy, even for subtle odour components. With the largest AI-compatible scent database, the company is also designing new scents for the fragrance industry.

Scent teleportation could revolutionise industries like virtual reality, where users could smell virtual environments, and have medical uses for conditions like anosmia.

While there are challenges, such as protecting proprietary fragrances, AI-driven scent reproduction holds significant potential across various fields.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Aġenzija Sapport and the Lands Authority for the transfer of a property located on Triq Rudolfu, Sliema. This property will be handed over to the Aġenzija Sapport to provide daytime services for young people with disabilities.

The agreement was signed by Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering Julia Farrugia and Minister for Lands and Electoral Program Implementation Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, who both presided over the signing ceremony.

This transfer will allow the Aġenzija Sapport to expand its operations and serve more individuals with disabilities by introducing modern, accessible facilities.

The building will undergo restoration and adaptations to create a comfortable and secure environment, supported by infrastructure that promotes full integration into society.

Minister Farrugia noted that this move demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing disability services, emphasizing that the project would offer specialised solutions for young people with disabilities, helping them reach their full potential.

She highlighted the government’s continued focus on social issues and the need for investment to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi emphasised the importance of efficiently using government-owned properties, noting that this initiative also aims to restore the historic Villa Alcazar, built in 1870, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
