’Toxic Invader’ Silver Cheeked Toadfish Caught In Maltese Waters

Taking to social media, marine biologist Alan Deidun shared photos of a ‘spreading toxic invader’ – the silver cheeked toadfish.

The fish were caught in Maltese waters by citizen scientist Theoclisto Vella and explained that the species was first recorded within Maltese waters in 2015.

It is reportedly responsible for a number of deaths each year ‘courtesy of the potent TTX toxin it holds throughout its tissue.’

It is a species native to the Indo-Pacific region and even cooking them is lethal!

26,720 Third Country Nationals Began Working In Malta Last Year

According to a parliamentary question tabled by MP Jerome Caruana Cilia and directed towards Minister Byron Camilleri, there were 26,720 third country nationals which began working in Malta for the first time last year.

The information does not include other foreign nationals who did not continue to work in the country during the year or left the country.

Reported Crimes In Malta Drops From 1990’s

During a recent Parliamentary Questions session, it was revealed that the number of reported crimes per 1,000 people in Malta has significantly decreased compared to the 1990s.

This information was presented by Byron Camilleri, Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms, and Equality, who outlined the annual crime rates since 1998.

The data was requested by PL MP Davina Sammut Hili, who inquired about crime trends in recent years.

The statistics show that the highest crime rate was recorded in 2004 and 2005, with 46 reported crimes per 1,000 people. In contrast, the lowest rate of 25 was recorded in 2020, likely influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, which confined people to their homes.

While the late 1990s and early 2000s saw averages in the mid-40s, a notable decline has been observed since 2018. Between 2018 and 2023, the highest reported rate was 33 in 2018, marking a significant drop in criminal activity over recent years.

116 People Injured In Traffic Accidents In Gozo This Year

According to a parliamentary question tabled by Chris Said and responded to by Minister Byron Camilleri, there were a total of 116 traffic accidents in Gozo in 2024 so far.

According to the data abled in parliament, only Zebbug registered an incident with an injury that resulted in a death.

The locality with the highest amount of injuries was Victoria with 32 individuals, followed by Xewkija at 23 and Ghajnsielem at 13.

Fontana and San Lawrenz registered the lowest amount of accidents with injuries with just 1.
