Towards Sustainable Fashion And Animal Welfare

Towards Sustainable Fashion And Animal Welfare
Aug 31 2023 Share

The Malta Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (MSPCA) is hosting “Reloved,” a unique event on September 14th at the Maria Rosa Winery Estate.

This event serves a dual purpose: raising awareness for animal welfare and promoting fashion sustainability.

The evening will feature informative presentations about the NGO’s ongoing efforts, a thrift-themed fashion show, captivating dance and acting sketches, as well as delectable food and wine.

Funds raised will support the MSPCA’s mission, which entails advocating for animal kindness, preventing cruelty, and upholding the rights of animals according to Malta’s Animal Welfare Act.

Since its inception in 1937, the MSPCA has been a dedicated shelter for animals, currently housing mainly dogs and cats. The organization has taken in over 100 animals this year and successfully rehomed 90. The event not only highlights animal welfare but also addresses the pressing need for fashion sustainability.

The fashion industry’s environmental impact is significant, being the second most polluting sector globally. Cotton production, a major contributor, uses large amounts of pesticides and water. The fashion sector is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater.

“Reloved” seeks to emphasize the interconnectedness of nature, animals, and humans and the importance of sustainability. It encourages responsible consumption and environmental stewardship.

The MSPCA aims to raise awareness about preserving the planet for future generations while supporting animal welfare. The event calls on the community to come together for a sustainable and compassionate world, benefiting animals and the environment alike.

Did you know that a Maltese chocolatier holds not one, but two, Guinness World Records?

That’s right, Andrew Farrugia is a Maltese chocolatier and holds the records for both the tallest and the longest chocolate sculptures.

The tallest chocolate sculpture is a 13.52-m-tall (44-ft 4.28-in) replica of the Burj Khalifa building and was unveiled at Dubai International Airport in Dubai, UAE, on 27 November 2014.

Meanwhile, the longest sculpture is 34.05 m (111 ft 8 in) long and depicts a train with an old steam locomotive and a modern locomotive at the two respective ends.

But that’s not all Andrew created, with his designs, using entirely delicious chocolate, are absolutely stunning in their attention to detail and magnitude.

Dmitry Babichev, the head at Professional Ship Modelling Workshop “Babichev”, created a 1:48 scale model of the Maltese Falcon Yacht.

The look at the 183cm model was shared back in 2021 – a smaller size recreation of the iconic vessel, built first in the 20th century.

The actual vessel is one of the world’s most complex and largest sailing yachts at 88cm and was put to charter use in 2008.

The model’s resemblance and detail is uncanny, capturing all the amenities of the yacht as well as its iconic Maltese banner at the back of the boat.
