Malta’s Connie Rixon struck silver in Guernsey as Malta competed in the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Guernsey over the past week.

Rixon delivered a consistent performance throughout as she had to contend with some of the world’s leading bowlers in her group. Earlier on in the week she beat 2023 Ladies Singles World Champion Tayla Bruce from New Zealand. Rixon ended Bruce’s hopes of another title following a nail biting game, with both ladies winning a set each and the winner being determined by a tie breaker. Ultimately it was Rixon who took the win and saw her progress to the semi-final in which she played against Scotland’s Natalie McWilliams in what was another nail biting tie-breaker. Another win for Rixon meant that history was made, as this was the first time a Maltese bowler had made it to the final. Rixon’s final match was against Malaysia’s Nor Farah Ain Abdullah, who won the final in straight sets.

This is not the first time that Rixon has put Malta’s name on the Bowls map. In 2018, she – together with her sibling Rebecca and mother Rosemary and Sharon Callus brought a Bronze Medal in the Women’s Fours during the Commonwealth Games held on the Gold Coast.

The Maltese contingent in Guernsey competed in the Women’s Singles, Men’s Singles and Mixed Pairs event and consisted of Connie Rixon and Joe Saragozza. Paul Kajewski performed Team Manager duties, whilst Birmingham Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist Lucy Beere undertook coaching duties.

“We are immensely proud of Connie Rixon’s remarkable achievement in securing the silver medal at the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Guernsey. Her success not only brings glory to Malta but also inspires our entire sporting community. We congratulate her on this historic milestone and look forward to witnessing more great achievements from our talented athletes in the future.” – Julian Pace Bonello, President, Maltese Olympic Committee.

Scarlett Johansson To Film New Jurassic World Movie In Malta

Scarlett Johansson To Film New Jurassic World Movie In Malta

As revealed by Times of Malta and confirmed by MaltaDaily, a new Jurassic World film, featuring Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, is scheduled to begin shooting in Malta this summer.

The production has secured almost all facilities at the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara for filming between July and September.

While only part of the movie will be filmed in Malta, the studios offer essential resources like infinite-horizon water tanks for large-scale effects and underwater shots.

The Jurassic franchise, which debuted in 1993 with Jurassic Park, has seen several sequels, including the 2022 film Dominion, partly filmed in Malta. Scenes shot in Valletta, Vittoriosa, Mellieħa, and Pembroke depicted Malta as a hub for a dinosaur black market.

The new film’s details are scarce, but it’s expected to premiere in July 2025, with Johansson in a leading role.

Johansson, known for her roles in Lost in Translation and as Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ films, brings star power to the production.

Malta’s attractive rebate scheme, offering a 40% cashback on production expenses, has enticed big-budget productions to the island. The government aims to maintain this rebate to bolster Malta’s position as a filming destination and enhance its tourism strategy with the film industry as a significant contributor.
