Maltese supporters of Tottenham Hotspur FC had a massive win to celebrate yesterday evening after their team beat Manchester United to end a 17 year dry spell.

Videos shared to social media show local fans of the team cheering on their favourite international team as they clenched the trophy after a Brennan Johnson in the 42nd minute sealed the deal.

The win in Bilbao marks Tottenham’s first European success since 1984 and ensures they will take part in next season’s Champions League.

For Manchester United, the result is a serious setback, not just in sporting terms but financially too, as they will be absent from European competition entirely for the first time in over a decade.

Meridianbet’s Quiet Green Revolution: 80 Sustainability Projects In 1 Quarter

Meridianbet's Quiet Green Revolution: 80 Sustainability Projects In 1 Quarter

A Public Company’s Grassroots Approach to Ecology and Sustainability

As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental and social responsibility, Meridianbet, a key member of the Golden Matrix Group (NASDAQ: GMGI), continues to implement impactful green initiatives across the markets where it operates.

Malta daily Facebook 970x90

In 2024 alone, the company organized nearly 300 CSR initiatives, and in the first quarter of 2025, that momentum has accelerated with over 80 projects focused on health, education, community impact, responsible betting — and increasingly, environmental protection.

Environmental Cleanup: Sport Meets Sustainability

Earlier this year, Meridianbet led a major environmental cleanup tied to the 32nd Fruška Gora MTB Marathon in Serbia, where the company served as the main sponsor. Combining sport, recreation, and ecological action, Meridianbet employees and volunteers led a large-scale effort to clean forest trails and protect one of the country’s most treasured national parks.

This event — driven by both Meridianbet and the Meridian Foundation — illustrates the company’s belief that environmental care is not just a corporate checkbox, but a shared social responsibility.

“Today’s action isn’t just symbolic — it shows how small acts, done together, can drive real change,” said Jovan Ignjatović, Meridian Foundation representative. https://x.com/meridianbet_ofc/status/1914726211227357469

From Local Action to Regional Inspiration

The success of the Fruška Gora initiative sparked similar efforts in other markets the country operates. One landmark example is Tanzania, where local CSR teams embraced the same environmental values. What began as a local cleanup grew into a multi-country movement, strengthening community ties and spreading ecological awareness across borders.

Epic Trail: Connecting Nature, Sports, Community – and Brand Trust

As part of almost 300 community-focused campaigns carried out in 2024, Meridianbet also organized the Epic Trail — a sports and recreation event that brought together runners, cyclists, and local communities across several markets where the company operates.

The campaign aimed to promote healthy lifestyles, social inclusion, and long-term brand trust through direct engagement on the ground. This initiative is another example of how Meridianbet builds its presence not just through numbers, but through real, measurable social impact. https://x.com/meridianbet_ofc/status/1914341062526587168

A Broader ESG Vision

While Q1 2025 activities focused heavily on ecology, both Meridianbet and its parent company Golden Matrix Group see sustainability as a long-term global mandate. Future campaigns will target greenhouse gas reduction, biodiversity protection, waste minimization, and the promotion of innovative green technologies.

Leading the Way in Responsible Business

Through these efforts, Meridianbet is not only supporting the communities it serves — it is also positioning itself as a global role model for environmentally conscious gaming. As part of a publicly listed company, these programs form an integral part of Golden Matrix Group’s ESG strategy, aligning growth with positive global impact.

At the Public Service Expo 2025, a new agreement was signed between the Local Government Division and the Active Ageing and Community Care entity, introducing a national programme aimed at strengthening support for older adults through intergenerational initiatives—chief among them, the School Grannies project.

The School Grannies initiative involves elderly women, often referred to affectionately as “nannies,” participating in classroom settings to engage with children in educational and social activities.

These may include reading stories, helping with crafts, or simply spending quality time with pupils.

The goal is to encourage meaningful interaction between generations, while providing children with additional care and attention, and offering older adults a renewed sense of purpose and connection.

This programme forms part of a wider collaboration focusing on dementia awareness, emotional wellbeing, and active ageing.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, stated that such initiatives reflect a more holistic approach to ageing—supporting both physical needs and emotional wellbeing.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, welcomed the agreement, noting that it will expand local efforts to promote dementia awareness, healthy ageing, and social inclusion, while helping local councils deliver more connected and compassionate services.

The programme also aligns with the broader goals outlined in Malta Vision 2050, which seeks to build a more inclusive and supportive future for all generations.

Over 1,500 passionate Manchester United fans gathered at the iconic Greek Theatre in Ta’ Qali for a live screening of the Europa League Final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Manchester United Malta Supporters’ Club, with over 1,000 members, is not only one of the largest supporter groups in Malta but also holds the distinction of being the oldest Manchester United supporters’ club in the world.

The bond between Malta and the Red Devils remains strong—evident in the recent honour awarded to Maltese fan Joe Glanville, who was named the 2024 Ian Stirling Fan of the Year at Old Trafford.

Despite the electric atmosphere, the support wasn’t enough to change United’s fortunes, as Tottenham secured a 17-year first major trophy win and a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Following the match, the Manchester United Malta Supporters’ Club took to Facebook to thank all the fans who turned out in large numbers.

Despite the disappointing result, they celebrated their first-ever screening at the Ta’ Qali Greek Theatre as a memorable and historic occasion.
