Malta’s Girls Who Code Outpace Europe’s Average with 23.3%

Malta’s Girls Who Code Outpace Europe’s Average with 23.3%
Apr 28 2025 Share

Malta has emerged as the leader in Europe for teenage girls coding, with an impressive 23.3% of girls aged 16 to 19 having written code in the three months leading up to the 2023 survey.

This far exceeds the European Union (EU) average of just 9.9%, showcasing the island’s strong commitment to empowering young women in the tech field and digital literacy.

In the 2023 survey, Malta’s share of teen girls coding was not only the highest in the EU but also significantly higher than many other countries. Malta’s top position in coding among young girls was a reflection of the country’s growing focus on digital literacy and educational initiatives aimed at encouraging young women to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.

Following Malta, Portugal and Lithuania also stand out for their strong participation in coding, with 23.1% and 17.8% of teen girls respectively taking part in programming activities.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, countries like Romania, Cyprus, and Sweden have much lower rates of teen girls engaging in coding.

Romania lags with just 1.3%, followed by Cyprus at 1.6%, and Sweden with 1.7%, indicating there is still a considerable gap in encouraging young women to explore technology-related fields in these regions.
