Oldest woman in Malta turn 111 years old!

The People of Malta, a local project which highlights the island’s various inhabitants, took to social media to congratulate Malta’s oldest woman, Maria Farrugia, on her 111th birthday.

Born on the 7th of March 1912, Maria hails from Ħamrun and told the People of Malta on her 110th birthday last year that there are no secrets to living a long life.

‘Life is in God’s hands’ she said, having led a simple life and having seen the islands change over the century she has been alive.

A sister to 4 other siblings, some of them had died young, with one of them passing away at 37 due to a bomb raid during the war. She was born in Mosta, grew up in Msida and moved to Ħamrun when WWII struck.

She was widowed in 1962 and had three children, two of whom passed away. Her daughter Carmen and her grandson Stephen now take care of her.

Working as a seamstress, she lived through both the Spanish Flu and the COVID-19 pandemic. Carmen told The People of Malta that Maria used to make blankets and selling milk with the family goat.

“Her family is very dear to her. She will not sleep without saying the rosary. She loves going through old photographs and recalling what she went through and recounting anecdotes. What does Maria like to eat? Simple food like vegetable soup and a slice of bread with oil and olives.”

Johnny Depp is making a fortune selling his paintings of celebrities

Johnny Depp is mostly known for his acting profession as well as his lesser known musical career. But another talent of the celebrity has recently emerged as he starts to make a fortune off of painting celebrities.

The actor’s second take of his ‘Friends and Heroes’ collection went on sale at Castle Fine Art Gallery last Monday, with prints starting at around $4,500.

The paintings were sold out in just a few days, with the paintings depicting reggae star Bob Marley, writer Hunter S Thompson as well as late actors Heath Ledger and River Phoenix.

His previous collection had depicted folk legend Bob Dylan, Rolling Stone’s Keith Richards, actress Elizabeth Taylor and actor Al Pacino.

His very first round of paintings had earned him $3.6 million, which sold out in July almost immediately. Depp has made anywhere from $17,500 to $17,800 in just a few days.

Depp had revealed to the Daily Mail that he had restricted himself to his day job of the film business for many years. However, he always ‘needed to escape into a blank piece of paper, whether it be writing, drawing or painting a blank canvas.’

PM says delays into Jean Paul Sofia inquiry are unacceptable

Addressing a parliamentary debate on Monday, prime minister Robert Abela slammed the length of time being taken for a magisterial inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia to conclude as unacceptable.

The Prime Minister noted how three months after the 20-year-old’s death in Corradino, the initial stages of an inquiry have not yet been concluded.

The procès-verbal, a report on the findings of a magisterial inquiry, is not yet wrapped up and nobody has been charged, said Abela.

This report would be presented in court as part of the compilation of evidence against anyone charged with a crime based on the inquiry’s findings.

Abela did not refer to the site or the victim by name, taking issue with the length of time and lack of action indirectly. Sofia had been found in the rubble of the collapsed site after 16 hours of searching.

A public inquiry into the death of Sofia has been pushed by his family as well as the Opposition, but the Labour Party has so far resisted.

The comments came as Abela praised retired judge Joe Żammit McKeon, who was approved to become Ombudsman on Monday and had issued, according to Abela, 2,106 court sentences in his 12 years as judge.
