‘This Is Not Eurovision’: Metsola On Chanting Of Bella Ciao

After Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban gave a speech presenting the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency at the European Parliament, chanting and singing of ‘Bella Ciao’ broke out during the plenary session.

In response, EP President Roberta Metsola remarked: ‘This is not the Eurovision’.

She later stated that it’s ‘more La Casa De Papel than Abba’ but that it is still ‘not the Eurovision.’

The song Bella Ciao is an Italian song dedicated to partisans of Italian resistance as they fought back occupying Nazi German forces and collaborationist fascists during the country’s liberation.

Officers Do Not Have Traffic Ticket Quotas, Police Insist

The police force has denied claims of a predetermined quota system for issuing traffic tickets, following testimony from an officer suggesting the existence of an unofficial quota, Times of Malta reported.

A police spokesperson clarified that while officers must report the contraventions they issue daily, this is part of a broader performance review.

“Officers on field duties are expected to enforce traffic laws appropriately, with no fixed targets for issuing contraventions,” the spokesperson stated, adding that this is based on traffic volume and activity in their areas during their shifts.

The denial comes after officer Clive Mallia testified in court, claiming an unofficial quota system required officers to issue at least 10 contraventions monthly, with higher targets in busy areas like St Julian’s.

His testimony was related to a case involving an assault on him and another officer following a traffic dispute.

It was the first public acknowledgment of such a system within the police force. Previously, community officers, or wardens, operated under a similar system until its abolition in 2015 by the Local Enforcement System Agency.

The police emphasised that district officers’ performance is evaluated based on several criteria, including patrolling and public engagement, with the goal of ensuring public safety and fair law enforcement.

A One-Night-Only Macbeth This October 18th

Teatru Manoel’s Learning and Participation Programme, Toi Toi, is presenting a new and exciting production of Macbeth on Friday 18th October at 7.30pm at St Agatha’s Auditorium, Triq Emanuele Vitale, Rabat. This production is part of our TOI TOI Classics outreach project, bringing the immediacy of Shakespeare’s language to life.

Adapted and directed by Philip Leone Ganado, this production features a cast of characters played by a talented troupe of actors including Anton Saliba as Macbeth and Michela Farrugia as Lady Macbeth with Joseph Zammit, Alex Weenink, Kelly Peplow and Katrina Lupi sharing all the other parts.

There’s a reason Macbeth is and has always been one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. This classic story of ambition, power and consequence remains as relevant today as it has ever been, its supernatural elements remain as dangerously alluring and its warnings on the nature of evil as timely.

It is also a deeply psychological play, charting the unravelling of two people who allow themselves to be seduced into acts of unspeakable horror. This adaptation seeks to tap into this horror, tracking Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the depths of their darkness and sticking close as the walls begin to close in and their downfall unfolds.

Whether Macbeth was, or is, on your study list or whether you are a theatre lover and/or would like to explore the beautiful world of Shakespeare this is the production for you.
