Tourists Spent €2.4 Billion Between January And October 2023

In October 2023, the total number of inbound tourists to Malta reached an estimated 313,705, reflecting a notable increase of 31.1% compared to the same month in 2022.

Among these visitors, 283,595 came for holiday purposes, while 20,375 visited for business reasons. The age group of 25-44 constituted the largest share of inbound tourists at 37.8%, followed by the 45-64 age bracket at 34.4%.

Notably, residents from the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany comprised 44.1% of the total inbound tourist population.

The total nights spent by tourists in October 2023 witnessed a significant surge of 30.7%, surpassing 2.0 million nights. The majority of guest nights (85.2%) were spent in rented accommodation establishments. The average length of stay for inbound tourists stood at 6.6 nights.

The overall tourist expenditure for October 2023 exceeded €300.8 million, marking a substantial increase of 39.0% compared to the same period in 2022. The average expenditure per night was estimated at €145.9.

Cumulatively, inbound tourists for the first ten months of 2023 amounted to 2,599,155, reflecting a robust increase of 31.6% compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

The total nights spent increased by 23.3%, reaching almost 17.8 million nights. The total tourist expenditure for this period was estimated at €2.4 billion, representing a notable 34.5% increase over 2022. Additionally, the total expenditure per capita increased to €914 from €894 in 2022.

Malta Recognised As Climate Mobility Leader During COP28

During an organized activity at COP28 at the International Climate Mobility Center, Malta was acknowledged as a Climate Mobility Champion Leader for its work in the field of climate change and its impact on small islands.

The Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Enterprise, Miriam Dalli, received this recognition after a discussion with young climate activists from various countries, particularly from islands and small countries affected by climate change.

Minister Dalli emphasised that Malta’s small size does not diminish its efforts to reduce emissions. She referred to the latest Eurostat statistics, indicating that Malta has the lowest emissions per capita in the European Union.

Despite being a small country, Malta is actively working to reduce emissions, especially in the energy sector, through policies on renewables, environmental financing, and recent projects such as shore-to-ship.

Minister Dalli also highlighted the importance of small countries, especially islands, coming together to have a unified voice in addressing the realities they face due to climate change, including rising sea levels.

Malta remains committed to conveying this strong message. At the conclusion of this event, Malta was recognised for its impactful message, drawing attention to the unique challenges faced by islands in discussions about climate change and its consequences.

Air Malta Flight Bookings After 30th March Cancelled

On Monday, Air Malta announced the cancellation of all flight bookings scheduled for March 31, 2024, and onwards, providing full refunds, including taxes, to direct customers.

Travellers who made bookings through agents will receive reimbursements through their respective agents. While Air Malta plans to cease operations on March 30, all flights leading up to that date will continue as scheduled, allowing normal booking and ticket purchases.

The airline’s replacement, KM Malta Airlines, commenced bookings on Monday, intending to operate under the familiar Air Malta brand and utilising the same aircraft.

The booking process is divided into two phases. The first, starting Monday, allows bookings for travel agents and third-party online platforms. Individual customers can also book by contacting the KM Malta Airlines Reservation Number.

The second phase, beginning on December 11, will enable direct online bookings through the new airline’s website and platform.

KM Malta Airlines has outlined its Summer 2024 schedule, spanning March 31 to October 26, encompassing 17 airports across 15 European cities.

Notable destinations include Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Catania, Dusseldorf, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly, Prague, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich.
