Feb 22 2023 Share

Plans were announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that a massive new proposed structure in the country’s capital Riyadh, called New Murabba, will be kicking off.

According to Riyadh-based newspaper Arab News, the Mukaab, will be serving as the focal point of the city’s New Murabba downtown.

The infrastructure will be a third the size off Manhattan and can fit about 20 Empire State buildings. The enormous structure is expected to transform the downtown as promotional videos show the span of this new project.

It will resemble a hollow cube, with its design said to be inspired by traditional Najdi architecture.

The 19 square kilometre complex will be erected to the Northwest of central Riyadh and will be one of the largest built structures in the entire world.

The building will be 400 metres high and 400 metres long on each side, making it a supertall skyscraper. Everything from hospitality, retail and leisure will form part of this new project.

It will add 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, 980,000 square metres off retail space, 1.4 million square metres of office space, an 80 venue entertainment and cultural program and much more.

A museum, a multipurpose theatre and various other amenities will be available in the complex with a transportation system and be situated around 20 minutes from the airport by car.

Fashion brand ‘Unhidden’ includes models with various disabilities

Fashion brand 'Unhidden' includes models with various disabilities
Feb 22 2023 Share

During London Fashion Week, fashion designer Victoria Jenkins presented her collection of stylish and practical clothes designed specifically for people with disabilities.

The event, named “Unhidden: A New Era in Fashion,” showcased around 30 models, all of whom live with a disability, chronic condition, or visible difference.

Jenkins, who has reduced mobility herself, recognised the gap in the market for clothes designed for all bodies during a hospital stay in 2016, when another patient brought it to her attention.

She decided to use her experience as a garment technologist to create her brand of adaptive fashion, “Unhidden,” which targets inclusion of people with disabilities in the fashion industry.

Jenkins’ collection includes floaty dresses with easy access around the waist, colourful chiffon tie shirts with adjustable sleeves, and royal blue shirts with pop snaps that open and close easily.

The collection also features shirts with longer backs for wheelchair users, tailor-made suits, and other practical designs.

Jessica Ping-Wild, a model and content creator who uses a prosthetic leg, expressed her appreciation for Unhidden, saying that a designer taking into account that bodies are different breaks the mould of beauty that has been ingrained in society for centuries.

Jenkins hopes that her clothes become more widely available in the future, as she believes that diversity without disability isn’t true diversity.

She wants people to understand that being disabled is not a bad word and that fashion should be accessible to everyone. By creating her brand, Jenkins aims to provide people with disabilities with the opportunity to dress how they need to without sacrificing their dignity.

Nadur Carnival attendees continued to get more creative as the festivities came to an end. After an entire weekend of celebrations and costumed fun, the carnival goers proved that their ingenuity did not run dry but only strengthened as the days went by. Here are some of the highlights:

Carnival goers in Nadur recreated an entire crime scene to finish off the festivities. Equipped with yellow crime scene tape and all the equipment stereotypical to such scenes, the carnival attendees continued to show pure ingenuity.

Echoing the Facebook comments beneath most posts uploaded by local political figures and ministers, carnival goers in Nadur decided to paint ‘Prosit Ministru’ on the Nadur road with paint. What do you make of this?

A carnival goer in Nadur decided to build a literal sand castle in the middle of the event. Equipped with a spade and buckets off sand, a placard with an image of Comino was also present, providing a bit of social commentary on the recent controversies surrounding infrastructure on the island between Malta and Gozo.

The Nadur Carnival saw some creative set ups and creative exhibitions by attendees. This one is yet another example of the commitment of the carnival goers as they stage a literal medical emergency. A ‘patient’ is placed on a medical bed as ‘nurses’ tend to his health emergency in the middle of the Nadur crowd.

It wouldn’t be a proper festivity without a little bit of sports! Nadur Carnival goers decided to stage a full-on volleyball match in the middle of carnival celebrations. Equipped with a net and volleyball, the masked players had a go at the competitive sport right in the middle of the street!

This one has to take the cake! Or the pasta? Nadur Carnival goers set up a pasta-making shop in the middle of the crowd as they carefully crafted various shapes of pasta to prepare for Barilla boxing.

New areas of Ta Qali National Park open up for the public

New areas of Ta Qali National Park open up for the public
Feb 22 2023 Share

New spaces and refurbishments at the Ta’ Qali National Park have just opened up for public access.

Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi inaugurated a new area for art and exhibitions at Ta’ Qali National Park whereby cultural productions will be held, including exhibitions and theatrical performances.

It will also serve as a space for artists where they can exhibit their creations to the public.

This new area will be complementing the existing Greek Amphitheatre which has also undergone a renovation process with new and accessible facilities for artistic needs such as rehearsal rooms, changing rooms and showers among others.

Underneath the same theatre, that accommodates around 850 people, a hall that can be used for various functions has also been completed.

In his speech, Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi explained how this area will give another dimension to Malta’s National Park project which will now not only be an open space where one can go and spend some quality time with their family, but will also serve as a platform for local and international artists to exhibit their talents.

The Architect in charge of the project, Perit Nadia Curmi explained how extensive service works has been carried out in these rooms with the installation of a new ventilation and air conditioning system.

The completion of this area is another phase of the Malta’s National Park project at Ta’ Qali which is being coordinated by the Department of Public Works and is one of the biggest environmental projects in our country.

While thanking all those who worked in this project, Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi concluded by saying that “in its totality, the National Park project will be another certificate of quality that continues to show the Government’s work towards creating wonderful open spaces with an emphasis on the environmental aspect and on improving the quality of people’s lives.”

In this new area, the Department of Public Works in collaboration with the Aviation Museum, is currently organising an exhibition of historical plans and photos that show the history of the development of the area of Ta’ Qali throughout the years. The public can also see another exhibition of original graphic illustrations from the books of Trevor Zahra, the renowned author whose name is synonymous with children’s books.
