COUNTING THE DAYS TO WEDNESDAY! In a matter of days, the Magical Illuminated Trail returns to transform the Verdala Palace Gardens into a dazzling festive wonderland. Running from December 4th to January 4th, this year’s trail promises a spectacular experience with new enchanting lantern installations that will delight visitors of all ages.

Among the highlights are The Mischievous Minions, an animated tribute to everyone’s favourite troublemakers, and The Wizard and His Magical Book of Spells, casting a mystical charm over the gardens. Fantasy lovers can explore The Avatar Garden, an homage to otherworldly realms, and marvel at The Dazzling Rainbow Forest, where vivid colours bring the trees to life.

Carefully crafted lanterns and creative displays make this year’s trail an unmissable event. Organised in support of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, and with the backing of the Malta Tourism Authority, it’s also an opportunity to give back during the festive season.

Another Edition Of Gigantic - Kirkop’s Christmas Village - Launched

This weekend, the Christmas Village will be held in Ħal Kirkop under the theme Gigantic. The event will take place on Saturday, December 30, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday, December 1, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, in the heart of the village. It is organized by the Ħal Kirkop Local Council with the support of the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government.

The initiative was announced by Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici, alongside Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli. They explained that the village will feature various attractions to immerse visitors in the festive spirit.

Minister Bonnici stated, “This initiative highlights how our traditions and culture remain a source of national pride. The village offers a unique opportunity for everyone to experience the festive season in an authentic and memorable atmosphere, appealing not only to locals but also to tourists seeking a glimpse of a traditional Maltese village.”

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli noted that several local councils are organizing similar attractions throughout December. A total of 30 councils will host initiatives funded through a special cultural activities grant. “It’s delightful to see so many councils offering free spectacles and attractions for Maltese and Gozitan families, indirectly strengthening Christmas traditions while enhancing quality of life,” she added, encouraging public attendance.

Among the attractions at the Gigantic Village in Ħal Kirkop are a Christmas tree made of milk cartons, stalls selling traditional food, and a special feature that will fill the streets of Ħal Kirkop with snow. The event will also include numerous activities and attractions for children.

Mayor of Ħal Kirkop Matthew Agius Zammit, local council members, and various organizations were also present at the announcement.

MP Cressida Galea took to Instagram to share her memorable experience volunteering in Ghana alongside other Maltese influencers as part of the HopeXchange team.

In her video, Cressida showcased the children being supported by the Maltese community and highlighted the impactful work being done at the hospital and in the surrounding areas.

Fellow MP Eve Borg Bonello also joined the trip, contributing to the efforts aimed at making a difference in the lives of those in need.

Minister Owen Bonnici, responsible for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, unveiled the results of the Screen Support Scheme, now under the administration of the Malta Arts Council.

The scheme has allocated €1 million to support local productions across key areas. Its development followed a thorough process of research and consultation to pinpoint critical sectors in need of funding.

Designed to back projects aimed at theatrical release, festivals, and broadcasting (including VOD/SVOD platforms), the initiative prioritises productions that promote creativity and culture while meeting international standards. Eligible categories include animations, documentaries, and cultural programming.

The scheme supports scriptwriting, development, and production for short films, feature films, and cultural programs. Of 58 applications from independent audiovisual entities, 23 projects secured funding.

Minister Bonnici emphasised the importance of indigenous filmmaking as a cornerstone of the creative industry. He announced that the scheme’s budget will double to €2 million in 2025, reaffirming the government’s dedication to expanding the sector.

Mary Ann Cauchi, COO of Funds and Strategy at the Malta Arts Council, underscored the scheme’s role in nurturing cultural growth and building a sustainable creative economy. She also highlighted new mentorship opportunities to support emerging talent within the film industry.
