BCRS Malta Ltd has responded to a recent incident shared on social media, in which an individual was seen repeatedly misusing one of its Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs).

The organisation strongly condemns this behaviour, labelling it irresponsible, unethical, and illegal, as it amounts to theft. BCRS highlighted that such actions undermine the national efforts to promote sustainability, reduce litter, and encourage responsible recycling across Malta.

BCRS reminds the public that all RVMs are equipped with CCTV cameras, which are actively monitored by the control room team. When fraudulent activity is detected, any fraudulent vouchers are immediately cancelled before they can be redeemed.

In addition, the relevant footage is forwarded to the appropriate authorities for investigation and further legal action. BCRS is also reviewing whether the machine involved sustained any damage.

To prevent similar misuse in the future, a software update is being implemented across all RVMs.

While BCRS acknowledges that no system is entirely immune to abuse, the organisation remains committed to upholding the integrity of the Deposit Return Scheme.

The public is urged to use the system responsibly and report any misuse via official channels to help protect Malta’s environment for all.
