5 ALTERNATIVE picks for Malta’s next president

5 ALTERNATIVE picks for Malta's next president
Nov 30 2022 Share

It seems like the entire country is currently discussing who could be George Vella’s successor in case he resigns and while there are quite a few picks who seem realistic or would be unsurprising, we couldn’t help but think of a few quirky, unconventional picks which the public would definitely love to see as Malta’s president.

Eileen Montesin

A staple of Maltese pop culture who would definitely be welcomed as president of the Maltese republic, from iconic ‘Ara Doris!’ moments to starring in one of Malta’s TV shows, there’s a reason why Eileen is Queen.

Il-Kapxi

Guaranteed to bring the festa vibes everywhere he goes, Joseph Mangion (more popularly known as Il-Kapxi) became a beloved local star after first hitting the Malta’s Got Talent stage in 2020 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Griz

Literally EVERYONE knows how much Griz means to Malta and, if there ever was a time that Malta needed a president of his commitment and character, it’s now. Griz spent a fair amount of years on Maltese television and now may be the time to jump to the next level.

Ira Losco

Malta’s very own queen of pop, you could say that Ira Losco has had quite a long and fruitful career in Maltese music and culture and the next natural can only be the presidency. Whether it’s judging parliamentary decisions or singing the national anthem, everyone would definitely love to see Ira as President.

Adrian Zammit

If there’s something the country truly needs at the now it’s a man who speaks the truth and who better that Il-Bebbuxu himself, Adrian Zammit. A lover of animals, people and open discussion, Adrian is the hero Malta deserves right now.

Who do YOU think Malta’s next president should be?

Who could be the next President of Malta?

Nov 30 2022 Share

As sources continue to speak about the possibility of President George Vella resigning from his post if the new abortion bill comes into place – here are 5 potential replacements – who could be the next President of Malta:

  1. Helena Dalli – The former Labour Minister, now serving as European Commissioner for Equality, could be a contender for the role of President of Malta.
  2. Lawrence Gonzi – The former Speaker and Prime Minister, interestingly enough had appointed George Abela as President of Malta. The probability of this happening might be low since Gonzi comes from the PN camp.
  3. Joseph Muscat – The former Prime Minister, although leaving his post during a turbulent period and a lot of controversy, is still very much admired by a large part of the population. This however might be of a low probability since Muscat has recently been appointed Chairman of the association representing Malta’s professional football clubs.
  4. Evarist Bartolo – The former Minister for Foreign Affairs, amongst other important roles occupied during his time in politics, could be a good contender for the role as he is largely respected across the Maltese Islands.
  5. Alfred Sant – The former Prime Minister, now MEP, could be coming to the end of his political career and the President role might be the best way to do it.

108 MEPs welcome amendments to Malta’s criminal code
Nov 30 2022 Share

108 Members of the European Parliament, including Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer, issued a statement and letter in support of the Maltese government’s bill to protect doctors and mothers from criminal action when termination of pregnancy occurs when the life or health of the mother is threatened.

The letter was circulated by Engerer and was signed by 55 members of various European national parliament’s. Engerer asked for 105 signatures but amassed a much larger amount in just 10 hours.

The signatories were not just from the European Parliament but also 14 different national parliaments in member states as well as Britain’s House of Lords.

Most of them from the socialist group and the Greens, Engerer said that he could not stand idle when he saw the letter penned this weekend by three conservative UK parliamentarians and House of Lords members who encouraged Malta’s parliament to reject the amendments.

These had expressed extreme concern about the bill, prompting Engerer to ask his friends in the EP to support the Maltese government’s decision.
