Experts at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) have warned that the Earth could reach the 1.5C danger threshold within the next five years, a monumental blow to the current global climate crisis.
The scientists estimate that there is a 40% chance that the temperature will exceed the pre-Industrial average countries sought out to avoid in the Paris Climate Agreement.
The WMO has also predicted that there is a 90% chance that one of the next coming five years could be ‘the hottest on record’, exceeding 2016’s previous record-high.
WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas warned that this situation should be taken very seriously as it will result in more melting of ice, high sea levels, more heatwaves and other extreme weather conditions which will impact the Earth’s security, health, environment and development.
