The Boy Tackling Illegal Dumping In Malta’s Seas

The Boy Tackling Illegal Dumping In Malta's Seas
Jun 26 2023 Share

Benjamin Calleja Falzon is a young De la Salle College student who just finished year 6, and through his new project is tackling illegal dumping in the Maltese islands, especially tiles in the sea!

Through his school, Benjamin had the opportunity to join the ‘Young Reporters for the Environment Malta,’ which is a global platform which encourages and teaches 11 to 25 year olds all about environmental contribution.

Ben focused his attention on illegal dumping, specifically tiles in our ocean.

‘His mission is to spread awareness on the subject of illegal dumping and hope to insure others to start doing simple things to help protect the earth’.

Taking to Paradise Bay, with the help of NGO Żibel providing supplies for the clean-up, he was surprised by the amount of micro plastics he found, prompting him to go back and clean up.

Through a Facebook page, he promoted the event and assembled a small group of children and adults to clean up the bay and successfully collected and correctly disposed of 4 large bags of litter.

This was his first organised beach clean up, but he plans on doing more in the future. If you wish to support Benjamin, make sure to follow his Tiles From The Ocean Page for further clean ups!

Farrugia emphasised that this could have turned very badly in the blink of an eye and wanted to expose just how reckless some drivers take to Maltese streets.

This comes as more reports of reckless driving surface and the unfortunate increase in traffic road accidents and fatalities.
