3 out of 10 Maltese are considering leaving Malta to work abroad

Dec 18 2022 Share

3 out of 10 Maltese citizens are considering emigrating away from Malta to work abroad. Citizens of Finland are the most likely to leave their country to work abroad, topping a recent EU survey with 39%, followed by Slovaks at 33%.

An EU-wide survey has shown, that the Maltese people who consider leaving would most likely move to UK or Italy which are the top two preferred destinations. Interestingly enough, only around 4 out of the 10 who would work abroad, said that they want to move to earn more money. Survey shows that those wanting to emigrate would look for a permanent job and possibly never return back.

The number of Maltese thinking of emigrating has increased by 10 per cent when compared to 2009. This puts Malta at the top of the list of the highest increase in people wanting to leave the country –  alongside Luxembourg. The Maltese are the third most likely to consider emigration for employment alongside citizens of Sweden and Latvia.

2 out of 3 Maltese with plans to emigrate said that the Coronavirus pandemic did not influence their plans, and are therefore still considering moving.
