92-year-old man becomes oldest person to pass GCSE Maths exam

Aug 25 2022 Share

Celebrations are due for Derek Skipper, a 92-year-old man who became the oldest person to ever pass the GCSE Maths exam.

Skipper served as an RAF radar engineer during the Korean War, taking a maths exam for the first time ever since 1946, shortly after WWII. Despite getting a grade five, the highest possible mark on the foundation paper, he stated that the results didn’t matter to him at all, he was just doing it for his own fun.

Skipper took the foundation paper amongst a hall of 15 and 16-year-olds after enrolling in a free adult education course. He did state that he wanted to take a higher paper rather the foundation, but that was not possible within the adult education programme.

After receiving the positive mark, Skipper uttered a few words of motivation, stating “What else are you going to do with your life? Do you just want to die off? You may as well enjoy it.”

Safe to say, the 92-year-old will definitely be celebrating his great marks.
