In August, two 16-year-old boys confessed to assaulting and robbing a food courier who had just delivered their order.
They attacked him with a hammer, causing injuries, and stole his motorcycle. Both minors, whose names were protected by a court order, were sentenced to probation. One of them was also required to perform 100 hours of community service.
The assault occurred in the car park outside the Marsaxlokk football ground. The victim reported the incident to the Birżebbuġa police station, stating that the youths assaulted him after expressing dissatisfaction with the food.
The attackers damaged his teeth and fled with his motorcycle. The first suspect cooperated with the police, leading them to an abandoned house where they had concealed the bike.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Gabriella Vella, recognized the need for probation and monitoring to prevent future harm to the public. The first teen, leading a relatively stable life, was placed under three years of probation and community service.
The second teen, requiring psychiatric and psychological help for substance abuse issues, received a similar sentence along with a treatment order.
The court couldn’t determine damages, but the victim retains the right to seek compensation through legal means. Inspector James Mallia prosecuted, and lawyers Veronique Dalli, Dean Hili, and Amadeus Cachia represented the accused.
