Tallinja Passenger Assaults & Insults Bus Driver

A video shared to TikTok by user sherm.1423 shows a man yelling at the Tallinja driver, demanding that he open the door.

Hurling racial insults and offensive language, the passenger called the driver names like “filthy Indian animal”, “ugly”, “clown”, “rubbish”, and “bastard”, before physically attacking him.

Despite the driver’s attempt to call the police and warning that he would wait for their arrival before opening the door, the passenger’s aggression escalated. The passenger even threatened to beat the driver, stating that he refrained only to avoid going to prison.

Malta Public Transport swiftly condemned the assault, confirming it occurred around 11am on Route 81 to Valletta. Police reportedly arrived on the scene to address the situation.

Eko Skola 2024 Final Session At Parliament Of Malta

Today, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, David Agius, led the final phase of Eko Skola 2024 in the Parliament of Malta. This educational program on environmental issues was initiated 22 years ago by Nature Trust – Malta in 2002. Two years later, in 2004, the final phase of Eko Skola began taking place in the Maltese Parliament. Therefore, Nature Trust – Malta is celebrating the twentieth year since the final section of Eko Skola started in Parliament.

The Deputy Speaker referred to the current situation in the world as nothing good. Apart from conflicts worldwide, the effects of climate change are negatively impacting human development, including the environment. There is always a sense of urgency to make important decisions, including preventive measures to safeguard and improve Malta’s environment for present and future generations.

Participants, children, and young people, discussed a motion referencing strategic goals. These are:

Transition to a Climate-Neutral Economy, Ecology, and Blue (marine) Environment;
Towards Preservation of Sustainable Urban Development and Cultural Heritage;
Ensuring Healthy Living and Well-being for All;
Accelerating Digital Transformation, Smart Mobility, and Connectivity; and
Achieving Social Justice and Prosperity for All.

This edition of Eko Skola in Parliament was also addressed by Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, Leader of the Opposition, Bernard Grech, Clifton Grima, Minister for Education, Sports, Youth, Research, and Innovation, Randolph De Battista M.P., Justin Schembri M.P., and Rebekah Borg M.P.

New Maltese Scheme to Foster More Love Towards Reading Amongst Children

In a bid to nurture a passion for reading among children, ten local councils forming part of the Western Region are set to benefit from an innovative scheme. Unveiled during a press conference commemorating World Book Day 2024, the initiative seeks to promote literacy and underscore the significance of reading in childhood development.

Under this scheme, interactive programs will be devised in collaboration with local associations and primary schools across each locality. These initiatives will encompass a diverse range of activities, including puppet shows, forum theatre performances, author meetings, and other educational endeavors, all aimed at instilling a positive attitude towards books.

Alison Zerafa Civelli, the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing the pivotal role of reading in expanding children’s horizons. She underscored the importance of integrating reading into the daily routines of young minds, affirming the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster a love for literature.

“We all recognize the transformative power of reading, not only in enhancing literary skills but also in broadening children’s understanding of the world around them. As a government, we stand firm in our resolve to empower regions and local councils in spearheading initiatives of this nature,” remarked Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

President Sandro Azzopardi echoed this sentiment, highlighting the educational objectives underpinning the initiative. Despite the presence of public libraries, Azzopardi emphasized the need to augment existing resources with enhanced programming to encourage greater utilization among the populace.

The selected localities set to benefit from this scheme include Žebbuġ, Siġġiewi, Kirkop, Immaqba, Qrendi, Safi, Żurrieq, Rabat, Mdina, and Had-Dingli. This concerted effort underscores the region’s commitment to nurturing a generation of avid readers and lifelong learners, laying the foundation for a brighter future.
