MUMN suspends industrial actions

Apr 12 2023 Share

The Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) announced the suspension of all industrial actions it had ordered three weeks ago in the Mater Dei Hospital, the Gozo General Hospital, and the health centres. Everything should be back to normal from tomorrow morning.

The decision came after the MUMN stated that it will call an Extraordinary General Meeting for midwives and nurses to present to them the Sectoral Agreement given by the Government so that they themselves can decide if it is acceptable or not.

The decision to suspend industrial actions came a few hours after the Government asked again for the conciliation process with MUMN regarding the new collective agreement for nurses and midwives.

The Ministry stressed that it is asking that the industrial dispute and the actions linked to it be stopped, so that the patients are given all the care they deserve.

However, earlier today, the Maltese College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists expressed serious concern about the industrial actions that began three weeks ago by the Union of Midwives and Nurses. The College stated that the industrial actions on patient care and safety are dangerous, and over 80 surgical procedures have been canceled in the gynaecology sector alone.

Most of these operations were scheduled to investigate symptoms that could indicate that the patient has cancer.

The MUMN has been protesting for improved working conditions and income for nurses and midwives.
