New Staff Car Park Opens At Mater Dei Hospital as Part of €700,000 Investment

Jun 25 2025 Share

Mater Dei Hospital will now benefit from a new car park offering approximately 135 additional spaces, located near the Oncology Centre. This project, representing a €700,000 investment, forms part of a broader vision to improve public health infrastructure while addressing the practical needs of hospital staff.

During the construction of the car park, a 2,300-year-old Punic tomb was discovered. Excavation work was carried out in close collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), which carefully documented and preserved all remains and artefacts before construction resumed.

The announcement was made during a site visit by Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, accompanied by Dr Robert G. Xuereb, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Medical Services (FMS).

Minister Abela emphasised that this new facility is a tangible example of the government’s commitment to prioritising the needs of healthcare professionals.

“Investment in clinical spaces is vital, but it is equally important to invest in support facilities such as this one. Our staff deliver some of the most sensitive and demanding services, and it is essential that we provide them with a healthy working environment and the support they deserve.” said the Minister Abela.

Dr Xuereb added that the FMS is not only focused on developing modern clinical infrastructure, but also on providing practical facilities that enable professionals to deliver the highest standard of care.

Minister Owen Bonnici stated, “Through this agreement, further initiatives in support of the Maltese language will be launched, including projects that bring together performing arts, culture, and our language. These initiatives have already benefitted students in state schools, and now students from Church schools in both Malta and Gozo will also take part.”

Minister Clifton Grima emphasised the importance of a holistic education that spans multiple dimensions and highlighted the need to further strengthen the use of the Maltese language.

Among the planned initiatives is the Mal-Melodija (“With the Melody”) project an educational programme that integrates linguistic, cultural and historical elements with various musical styles that appeal to today’s youth.

Previously aimed at Year 8 (Form 2) students, Mal-Melodija will now be extended to Year 9 (Form 3) students as well, thanks to this new agreement.

A funeral Mass to celebrate his life will take place at Għargħur Parish Church on Saturday 28 June at 8:00 AM.

Those attending are kindly asked to wear white and blue, colours that reflect his pure soul and the brightness he shared with the world.

To honour his memory in a lasting way, Francesca shared plans for a new playground to be built at Hand in Hand, where Zaylen spent many happy days. Named Zaylen’s Playground, it will be a space filled with the joy and laughter he so freely gave.

Hand in Hand, the inclusive school Zaylen attended, paid tribute to him as a beloved student.

“To know Zaylen was to love him. And we truly did,” the school said in a statement. They remembered his energy, curiosity, and love, his fondness for dinosaurs and puzzles, and the joy he brought to everyone around him.

Rest in peace Zaylen. Condolences to all loved ones.
