The Environmental Health Directorate, under the Superintendence of Public Health, has issued a public warning advising against swimming at Ta’ Xbiex due to water contamination concerns. According to the Bathing Water Directive, foul water has overflowed into the sea, potentially containing traces of sewage, posing a health risk to swimmers.

Authorities are actively investigating the situation. However, the duration of the contamination remains uncertain at this stage. Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) are assessing the water quality, but the public is urged to stay out of the water until further notice. The contaminated water may impact the quality of bathing water, making it unsafe for swimmers.

Warning signs have been posted at the Ta’ Xbiex site to inform the public. Once the water quality is restored, these signs will be removed, and a follow-up statement will be issued to confirm the area is safe for swimming again.

The public is encouraged to remain cautious and follow updates from health authorities as the situation develops.

Legal Action Against Marsa-Hamrun Bypass Green Wall Contractor

Infrastructure Malta is taking legal action against The Doric Studio, the contractor responsible for maintaining a green wall along the Marsa-Ħamrun bypass.

The agency announced in a Facebook post that the contractor failed to fulfil its maintenance duties under a five-year agreement, leading to the wall’s deterioration. Legal steps are being taken to ensure the maintenance is carried out at the contractor’s expense.

The Doric Studio, an architectural and civil engineering firm, was paid nearly €480,000 to install and maintain the green wall. However, despite featuring the project on their website, the link to the page was not working, and their social media presence has not been updated since August 2022, Times of Malta reported.

Inaugurated in late 2020, the green wall spans 350 meters and includes over 27,000 plants, an auto-irrigation system, and CCTV cameras to prevent theft and vandalism.

The project was initially promoted as an initiative to improve air quality and beautify the area. Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg praised its potential environmental and aesthetic benefits at the time. Despite these promises, the wall’s current state has prompted Infrastructure Malta to take legal action to ensure the contractor meets its obligations.
