Surge in holiday seekers as travel restrictions in Germany ease

Germany is experiencing holiday-mania following the widespread relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions at home and abroad. With the prospect of travel back on the table, the country considers summer break to be a basic human right. Everything prompted the frenzy for holidays – a 42% decrease of cases on last week, a vaccine campaign which picked up pace from its slow initial rollout and even the relaxation of measures of other countries and tourist favourite hotspots with Malta being included.

With the foreign ministry taking several countries off a list of high-risk regions in recent days, hundreds of thousands of Germans are planning to make their holiday a reality in the coming weeks. Germany, along with France and Greece, are still carrying a warning. Travelling Germans require proof of full vaccination or negative PCR tests.

Many initially opposed to vaccine in UK have been vaccinated

Around more than half of the people in the UK who were vehemently opposed to getting their COVID-19 vaccine have had their jab. Researchers at the University of Bristol and King’s College London found that about one in seven of vaccine sceptics who are yet to get their jab will be doing so once they are offered. The main driving force behind this change of heart was, according to quantitative social scientist and lecturer Dr Siobhan McAndrew, the benefits of being vaccinated in terms of travel and meeting people.

McAndrew stated that ‘part of the rise in vaccine confidence relates to social proof: people feel more confident because they observe others taking their vaccine with confidence.’ 84% of those who deemed themselves not at all likely to get the jab when asked in November last year have also received a jab. Many were also waiting and seeing, their confidence to get the vaccine being boosted by the evidence that the jab is safe and effective.

Malta has registered 2 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,721 swab tests, while 4 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Saturday 12th June 2021, 582,206 vaccine doses were administered of which 335,791 were 1st doses. 256,079 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,581 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,100 have recovered, 419 died and 62 are still active.

Fisherman survives ending up in humpback whale’s mouth

US lobster fisherman Michael Packard told the tale of how he was allegedly stopped into the mouth of a humpback whale on Friday and survived to tell the story. Packard said that he was in the sea mammal’s mouth for about 30 to 40 seconds before being spat back out. Packard was diving for lobster off the coast of the northeastern state of Massachusetts.

During his hunt, he felt a huge push and was suddenly engulfed in darkness, down 35 feet underwater. No other similar accidents of this kind were ever reported, with many stating that, should it be true, was simply in the wrong place and time. He was taken to hospital as he was heavily bruised, but thankfully broke no bones.
