Superintendent Johann Joseph Fenech Has Been Promoted To Assistant Commissioner

The Malta Police Force have announced that Superintendent Johann Joseph Fenech was promoted to Assistant Commissioner on 28th of May.

Mr Fenech began his career as a Police Inspector in 2004 and was promoted to Superintendent in 2018.

Over the years, he has served in both district policing and specialised branches. He has also led the Gender-Based and Domestic Violence Unit (GBDVU) since its establishment in October 2020.

In his new role, Assistant Commissioner Fenech will lead the ICT & Data Management Unit — a strategic position central to the Force’s digital transformation.

Commissioner Angelo Gafà has described the promotion of Johann Joseph Fenech to Assistant Commissioner as a significant step in the Force’s ongoing modernisation efforts.

“This appointment marks another important step in our journey towards a modern and professional police force,” Commissioner Gafà stated.

Maltese Athletes Brings More GSSE Medals

Malta currently sits 4th out of 9 countries, with an impressive total of 29 medals: 8 gold, 11 silver, and 10 bronze.

In Karate, Heorhii Denysov secured a bronze in the Men’s -75kg category, bringing Malta’s Karate medal count to two golds and two bronzes.

Artistic gymnast Julia Galea delivered an excellent routine to win silver on the floor, while teammate Sophie St John added a bronze, rounding off a superb showing from Malta’s gymnasts.

Swimming sensation Sasha Gatt continued her strong run, adding a silver in the 1500m freestyle to her earlier gold, further contributing to Malta’s success in the pool.

The Women’s 4x100m Medley Team—Victoria Balderacchi, Zoe Cawsey, Michela Portelli, and Nirvana Micallef—also claimed silver with a solid performance.

In Table Tennis, Felix Wetzel and Maria Carmelia Iacob each earned silver in the Singles competition, boosting Malta’s medal count even further.

Gianluca Chetcuti added a bronze in the men’s trap shooting event, following a superb qualification round where he had placed first.

Meanwhile, the Malta Women’s 3×3 basketball team secured a silver medal after a hard-fought final against Luxembourg, narrowly losing 19–15.

Sophie St John Makes History At GSSE 2025 With Five Medals For Malta

Maltese gymnast Sophie St John has delivered an unforgettable performance at the 2025 Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in Andorra, bringing home an incredible five medals, three gold, one silver, and one bronze.

Her father shared an emotional message online, calling the experience one the family will treasure forever. “Sophie’s medals shine brightly, but it’s her grit, grace, and heart that make us the proudest,” he wrote. “Watching her shine on the podium again and again was something we’ll never forget.”

The Maltese Olympic Committee praised Sophie’s performance, noting her 12.550-point win in the Vault as a standout moment.

Sophie also took gold in the Beam, earning a top score of 12.900, her third gold of the Games and second of the day.

EP Delegation Visits Gozo To Discuss Transport and Tourism Challenges

The importance of connectivity – by air, sea and through energy infrastructure – was the dominant theme of three days of meetings held in Malta and Gozo by a European Parliament Delegation from the Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Committee.

MEPs Mr Virginijus Sinkevičius (Greens, LT), Ms Nina Carberry (EPP, IE), Ms Elena Nevado Del Campo (EPP, ES), Mr Sérgio Gonçalves (S&D, PT), Mr Daniel Attard (S&D, MT) and Mr Arash Saeidi (The Left, FR) met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Ministers for Transport and for Gozo, and MPs from both sides of the House. They had the opportunity to hear directly from stakeholders about the challenges Malta and Gozo face in these sectors as they seek to become more sustainable.

For the first time ever, an official European Parliament committee delegation has included Gozo as part of its formal programme — marking a historic milestone for the island.

The visit, held between 26–28 May, brought members of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) to Gozo, shining a much-needed EU spotlight on the island’s connectivity challenges, seasonal tourism pressures, and infrastructure needs.

This is the first time that an MEP committee delegation has formally visited Gozo, a significant moment not only for the island but for Malta’s role within the European Union. The move signals growing recognition of Gozo’s unique geographic and economic realities at the highest levels of EU decision-making.

The delegation’s programme includes site visits, discussions with local stakeholders, and assessments of regional challenges. The visit will conclude with a press conference at Europe House in Valletta on Wednesday at 12:30 PM.
