The new Super Mario Bros Movie has broken box office records, scoring the most successful global opening of all time for an animated film, earning €321 million worldwide in its first five days on release. This overtook the previous record of €307 million held by Frozen 2.

“The numbers are sensational,” noted analyst David A Gross, who said it would “easily be the #1 flick of 2023”. In the movie, Chris Pratt voices the moustachioed Italian plumber, while Jack Black plays the fire-breathing villain Bowser.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie has been well received by fans, with a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also broke other records, including the best-ever opening for a movie based on a video game and the top opening of 2023 so far. Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “This is one of the biggest box office over-performances in recent memory and is absolutely shattering all pre-release projections.”

A local photographer, Aron Tanti, was able to capture the beauty of the northwards migration of wild ducks.

Sharing these photos to social Media, BirdLife Malta, took the opportunity to advise people to stay cautious and “look carefully around if you happen to be crossing the channel between our islands”.

The BirdLife post continued by saying that “Although these images feature the beauty of the northwards migration of wild ducks, there are other species that one might encounter, including various heron species, curlew, ibises and whimbrels, to name a few. The duck species featured in these photos is the Garganey. ”

Marine biologist Alan Deidun took to social media to share more images of the Velella velella jellyfish, known in common parlance as ‘mini sailing boats’, which is currently taking over multiple beaches around Malta and Gozo.

The jellyfish, known as ‘qlugħ’ in Maltese for it’s sail-like top, can be seen in a massive ‘innocuous colony of polyps attached to the same raft.’

Deidun has previously shared images of the same species taking over the Gozitan Xatt l-Aħmar and the southern coast of Malta.

Information about this jellyfish can be found on the Spot the Jellyfish Campaign identification manual, which reveals that it has a low irritation sting.

‘It is frequently found in the Mediterranean, especially during spring. It can form dense aggregations extending for kilometres on the sea surface. Specialised floating sea slugs and sea snails find it to be a delicious snack!’
