Successful rescue operation conducted by Armed Forces of Malta at Delimara

In a swift and efficient response, the Armed Forces of Malta carried out a successful rescue operation earlier this morning.

The Malta Rescue Coordination Centre received an emergency call via the 112 hotline from a concerned civilian who reported an individual in distress at ‘il-Ħofra l-Kbira’ in Delimara.

Responding promptly, the Armed Forces of Malta deployed its assets to the specified location, successfully rescuing the casualty. The individual was then transferred into the care of medical personnel from Mater Dei Hospital for further assistance.

The prompt action taken by the Armed Forces of Malta and the seamless coordination with the Malta Rescue Coordination Centre played a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient execution of the rescue operation.

By responding swiftly to the distress call, the Armed Forces demonstrated their commitment to protecting lives and maintaining maritime safety.

Moviment Graffitti battles to save Nigret farmland from conversion into apartments

A pressing issue has emerged in Nigret, Żurrieq, where a significant parcel of farmland, measuring larger than a football pitch and a half, is under imminent threat of being transformed into blocks of flats. Moviment Graffitti, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), is leading the charge to protect the remaining green spaces. With a planning application set to be decided upon by the Executive Council of the Planning Authority (PA) on Tuesday at 3pm, concerned citizens are raising their voices against this potential environmental and cultural loss.

Moviment Graffitti and local residents are vehemently opposing the proposed development and arguing against the weak justifications put forth by the Planning Authority. While the area is no longer classified as Outside Development Zone (ODZ) due to a questionable decision made in 2006, this does not grant the developer an automatic right to build. The law is unequivocal on this matter.

In a protest this morning, the NGO said that according to the highest planning policy, outlined in the Strategic Plan for Environment and Development (SPED) document, changing the status of agricultural land to residential use must be approached with caution. The SPED document prioritizes the preservation of agricultural areas and discourages their destruction. Recent court rulings have further confirmed the importance of protecting areas that hold historical or environmental value, even if they are no longer designated as ODZ since the 2006 decision.

In light of the existing legislation and court rulings, Moviment Graffitti said that the Planning Authority not only possesses the right but also the obligation to reject the destruction of 11,500 square meters of valuable agricultural land for apartments that are unnecessary. “It is incumbent upon the authority to prioritise the common good and environmental preservation over the profit-driven interests of developers.”

To amplify their concerns and demands, Moviment Graffitti and concerned citizens are organizing a national protest scheduled for Saturday, May 27.

9-year-old girl suffers injuries after being hit by a car

Santa Lucija and Santa Venera witnessed two unfortunate incidents yesterday, resulting in injuries to individuals involved. The local police have launched investigations into both accidents to determine the circumstances and establish accountability.

The first incident occurred at around 6:45pm in Triq Dawret it-Torri, Santa Lucija. Authorities received reports of a traffic accident involving a 9-year-old girl. Swiftly responding to the distress call, the police arrived at the scene to find that the young girl had been hit by a Ford Transit Connect vehicle. The driver, a 43-year-old resident of Qormi, was operating the vehicle at the time of the incident. Details regarding the cause of the accident remain under investigation. However, it is clear that this unfortunate event has resulted in significant harm to the young victim.

The second incident took place later in the evening, around half past nine, on Triq il-Kukkanja in Santa Venera. The police were alerted that a 37-year-old man from the Philippines and a resident of Pieta had fallen while riding an e-kick scooter. The exact circumstances leading to the fall are still being examined by the authorities. The man was promptly provided medical assistance by a dedicated team on-site. Subsequently, he was transported to the hospital via ambulance, where medical professionals confirmed his serious injuries.

In both cases, the injured individuals received immediate medical attention to address their conditions. They were swiftly transported to the hospital for further assessment and treatment. Unfortunately, the severity of their injuries has been certified as grievous.

The police have initiated investigations into both incidents to shed light on the causes and gather pertinent evidence.
