A study published by Stephan Grech, Joseph N Borg and Sarah Cuschieri has revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced an increase in enhanced back pain across the Maltese islands, especially in those who work or exercise from home.

49% of respondents reported enhanced back pain as a result of the pandemic with more than half not reporting any chronic back pain.

The study also revealed an increase in weight amongst respondents with over half of the participants registering the aforementioned. The results suggest that one of the main reasons of the increase in back pain could be credited to the lifestyle changes imposed by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, referencing prolonged periods of sitting down with low activation of the lumbar muscles.
