A petition has been started by local students to remove a study unit, known as CASP, from being mandatory due to it having been suddenly introduced.
The petition, which as of yet amassed around 1,140 signatures out off a 2,000 goal, states that students were not informed about the study unit when applying for the University of Malta.
‘It would exceed the recommended 60ECTS credits, causing many students to have severe difficulties focusing on the study units they have come to study at UOM.’
The petition description also laments having put students through hassle to remove just one extra ECTS and subsequently subjected to additional 8.
‘European universities let you graduate with 180ECTS credits, and suddenly, we would need to make 188ECTS’ which, according to those signing the petition, is unfair. ‘Especially when last year’s students did not attend the said course.’
Student Bradley Cachia took to social media to raise awareness about the issue. He explained how he had been forced to pay for private lessons during sixth form to take an extra A-Level English exam to avoid having to attend another extra set of lessons (the English Language Proficiency).
‘Then, in the middle of the year during exams and a few days before the second semester begins, you invent a new mandatory requirement which begins as of Monday. This, without informing us about it when applying for University’ he explained.
