Mġarr United Clinch Their First Ever Women’s Football Trophy

May 2 2025 Share

Mġarr United made history on Thursday evening by securing their first-ever women’s football title, defeating Hibernians 2-0 in the Assikura Women’s Knock-Out final.

The Greens delivered a composed and dominant performance, denying the Paolites any real chance of mounting a challenge throughout the match.

It took just six minutes for Mġarr to take the lead, as Maria Hernandez capitalised on a well-placed corner by Yanina Mendez, heading the ball into the net.

With the early advantage, Mġarr shifted to a counter-attacking approach, effectively managing the game while seeking to extend their lead.

Their strategy paid off just before the break. A fluid attacking move saw Alejandra Villegas and her sister Valeria link up brilliantly, with the latter doubling the score to put Mġarr in a commanding position heading into half-time.

The second half saw both teams create several chances, but neither side was able to find the net again. Despite Hibernians pushing forward in search of a comeback, Mġarr’s defence stood strong to preserve their clean sheet and seal a historic win.

This triumph marks a major milestone for Mġarr United and a deserved celebration for their remarkable Knock-Out campaign.

PN Pledges To Scrap Tax On First €10,000 From Part-Time And Overtime Work

May 2 2025 Share

In a speech marking Worker’s Day, PN Leader Bernard Grech revealed that if his party is elected to Government they will scrap tax on the first €10,000 received from part-time or over-time work.

Grech revealed that the proposed measure was designed by the Nationalist Party to provide direct assistance to those workers making major sacrifices to keep up with the rising cost of living.

The Opposition Leader stated that that pledge is one of the many proposals that address worker’s issues such as  the proposed exemption of the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) from taxation, the provision of tax credits to small and medium-sized businesses to absorb wage increases, and the creation of a fund for importers and exporters to cushion the impact on prices.

Bernard Grech reaffirmed that all workers deserve fair and equal pay for performing the same job, stressing that there should be no distinction between first-class and second-class workers.

Throughout his address, Grech stated that the Nationalist Party believes that work should be of quality and should lead to a life of dignity, opportunity, and respect.
