Public consultation on integration launched

Public consultation on integration launched
Jun 1 2023 Share

During a news conference, a public consultation was launched ahead of the second politics and plan of action in regards to integration.

This comes after the first plan of action was carried out throughout the past five years, Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg said.

The consultation, which aims to ensure that citizens have a say in shaping the final policy, was launched at Spazzju Kreattiv on Wednesday.

Buttigieg said that, given the complexity of integration, a one size fits all solution cannot be taken. ‘It requires a combination of measures to achieve a better society for current and future generations.’

The national action plan was taken on by a working group led by the Directorate for Human Rights, with representatives from Identity Malta, Local Councils, the Police Force and the Refugee Community.

For the public to participate, they are being asked about their views on how Malta has dealt with integration so far and what tangible programs can be proposed.

If you wish to participate, you can do so here.

18 to 21: minimum construction license age to be raised

18 to 21: minimum construction license age to be raised
Jun 1 2023 Share

Planning Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained on Wednesday that the minimum age required for applying for demolition, excavation or building works has been raised from 18 to 21.

The Minister explained that the minimum age that was originally proposed last March was 18, but has been raised following suggestions in a consultation period.

Licensing, the minister argued, will improve the quality of the construction sector and lead to better law enforcement. This of course gathered steam after the tragic death of Jean Paul Sofia, with protests and demonstrations insisting authorities address the matter better.

The legal notice which introduces the license requirement for contractors is being finalised and will be published once the European Commission gives clearance.

New and old building contractors will be required to have insurance, along with the status of one’s police conduct and financial stability. The reform could see applicants guilty of a serious crime in the five years prior to applying not being eligible for such a license.

Fresh milk products price increase announced

Malta Dairy Products Ltd. has just announced that it will be raising the prices of its fresh milk products as of Thursday 1st June.

The company pointed to the significant increase in production and operational costs as the reason for the uptick in prices.

If you’re wondering how much you’ll be paying for what, here are the new prices:

  • Whole milk 1L – from €0.96 to €1
  • Milk 2.5% fat 1L – from €0.94 to €1
  • Skimmed Milk 1L – €0.92 to €1
  • Lactose Free Milk 1L – €1.15 to €1.25
  • Milk 2.5% fat 0.5L – €0.54 to €0.58
  • Skimmed Milk 0.5L – €0.52 to €0.58
  • Lactose Free Milk 0.5L – €0.65 to €0.70

‘The constant and persistent increases in production and operational costs have meant that MDP can no longer absorb these costs internally’ said the company.

Thanking its customers for the loyalty towards the Benna products and brand, the company stated that it still aims to ensure that customers are well provided with competitive local fresh milk products.
