Star-studded crew to come to Malta to shoot epic Napoleon movie

The amount of momentum the Maltese film industry has gained in the past years continues to ramp up as academy-award winning director Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning ‘Joker’ star Joaquin Phoenix are coming to Malta to shoot a film about Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise.

Phoenix and Scott’s last visit to Malta was for the 2000 blockbuster hit ‘Gladiator’, with Scott having set his eyes on Malta for ‘fantastic Napoleonic courtyard’ which had alluded to in a Hollywood Reporter interview in June.

The movie’s title ‘Kitbag’ is derived from the saying “there is a general’s staff hidden in every soldier’s kitbag” and is set to begin filming in early 2022.

Beyond Phoenix and Scott, the star-studded team also includes cinematographer Dariusz Adam Wolski who has previously worked on the Pirates of the Caribbean films and visited Malta back in May to scout for locations.

The Malta Fireworks Special celebrating Maltese tradition over 4 days

Malta and Gozo’s skies will be lit up this September as The Malta Fireworks Special will pay homage to one of Malta’s instantly-recognisable traditions – the art of fireworks. The Malta Fireworks Special will take place over four days in four different locations. Kicking off on the 4th of September in Gozo, it will continue on the 9th of September in Mqabba, on the 11th in Mellieha and then to finish off on the 20th September in Valletta’s Grand Harbour with a massive finale.

Complex five to seven minute firework shows will treat all those watching, all at the hands of 29 Firework Factories and 45 Firework Associations from all over the islands. Minister for Tourism Clayton Bartolo stated that the vent is sterling news for the entertainment industry. As the path towards normality commences, it is crucial that the Maltese public remains responsible with full respect of the regulations outlined by the Superintendence of Public health.

Malta Rocks is bringing the best local talent on one stage

MaltaRocks is an upcoming annual concert which will be giving some of the best local talent a stage to perform and entertain. Launched today, this first edition will take place on the 17th of September 2021 at the Fosos Floriana. With a two-fold vision, it aims to give local talent exposure and kickstarting a new post-COVID era of local entertainment. Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo remarked that Malta Rocks is brilliant news for the entertainment industry as we head towards normality.

Mark Grech, producer for the show, pointed out how this event is a testament of the quality of talent that we have seen on our islands. It is also ‘a rubber stamp of approval for all the things done throughout the years by various sectors and stakeholders to improve the entertainment industry. The team looks forward to continuing to grow this concept, sot that it can become a yearly event where the majority of local talent could be exposed.

Malta Rocks will feature performances by all the following artists (in alphabetical order): Destiny, Kantera, Kersten Graham, Lapes, Michela, Mikaela, Matthew James and Band, Owen Luellen, Red Electrick, The Busker, The Riffs, Tribali and Wayne and Band. The event will be seated and adhering to COVID-19 health and safety protocols is the utmost priority.

New construction reform will bring peace of mind to Maltese families says Environment Minister

Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia announced that the ongoing building and construction reform will ensure a stronger and more sustainable industry. Speaking during a visit to a construction site together with Parliamentary Secretary for Construction Chris Agius and Building and Construction Authority CEO Karl Azzopardi, the minister highlighted how this will improve the quality of life and provide peace of mind to all families.

In preparation for the licensing of contractors, a registration process has been launched, revealed the Environment minister. The licensing of contractors, according to the minister, is one of the foundations of the government’s commitment to regulating the industry and implementing the promised reform. Launched first and foremost to take stock of existing operations through the registration process, Minister Farrugia also announced the authority has now been officially established.

The transition was completed in recent days, with the Minister highlighting the main scopes of the authority for upcoming years. This includes the implementation of the first ever National Building Codes, explaining how the authority’s executive and board have been working on the strategy and action plan which will lead towards sustainable transformation of the industry.

The Minister stated that the establishment of the authority is one part of the ongoing reform in the construction sector. ‘This was one of the main points in the Quintano report. This reform will continue to modernise, safeguard and strengthen the industry while improving quality of life and providing peace of mind.’
