St George's Square in Valletta shines with lantern crosses
Apr 6 2023 Share

St George’s Square in Valletta was lit up with a beautiful formation of lantern-light, creating three large cross shapes as the islands gear up for Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebrations.

Valletta Cultural Agency chairman Jason Micallef took to social media to share some stunning aerial images of the square as it was lit.

The Valletta Cultural Agency too shared more images of the decorations, showing the process of the lighting of the lanterns. The decoration will remain up until next Saturday 8th April, just before the country celebrates Easter.

The images were shared and liked by locals and others, who commented about the atmosphere created. Some even urged bars and restaurants in the capital city to try and keep volume at a low so as to not ruin the atmosphere created.

Ann Agius Ferrante, who was Malta’s first Nationalist Party woman MP, has passed away aged 97.

The passing was announced by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on social media, who described her as a ‘trailblazer’ and ‘formidable.’

Metsola revealed that the first thing she did when she was elected as the European Parliament’s First Vice-President was write to her.

‘I thanked her for making the path easier, for enduring so that my generation would not have to, and to promise her that I will play my part in making it easier for those who come after me. A grateful Malta will miss her. May she rest in peace’ wrote Metsola.

Agius Ferrante was also given tribute by Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, who said that she always encouraged those who wanted to contribute to society to not let anything discourage them from doing so.

Other Nationalist MPs gave tribute to her, including Eve Borg Bonello, the youngest MP ever elected in Malta, also on the PN ticket.
