PM Launches Basis Of Malta Vision 2050

PM Launches Basis Of Malta Vision 2050
Apr 9 2025 Share

During a public discussion held at the Cittadella in Gozo, Prime Minister Robert Abela launched the foundation for Malta Vision 2050, a long-term strategy focused on building a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive nation. The session, held in the presence of Cabinet Ministers, brought together speakers of all ages from across Malta and Gozo to discuss a shared future.

The Prime Minister unveiled the vision’s main declaration: “A safe and resilient nation, inspired by its historical heritage and driven by progress, which promotes a healthy quality of life for all.” He emphasised Malta’s potential to become a forward-looking, strong, and caring society—one that invests in people, preserves its identity, and embraces innovation and courage.

The vision is built on four key pillars:

Sustainable Economic Growth, with a goal of maintaining a 5% annual growth rate through strategic sectors such as digital innovation, high-end manufacturing, finance, tourism, and maritime services.

Accessible and People-Centred Services, focusing on inclusivity and high-quality healthcare, mobility, and social services powered by digital tools.

National Resilience and Education, aiming to reduce foreign dependency in critical areas like energy, food, and water, while promoting a future-oriented education system that supports climate adaptability.

Intelligent Use of Land and Sea, targeting ecological balance through improved planning, land reclamation, and increased green spaces.

These are supported by four enablers: good governance, targeted funding, digital transformation, and rebranding Malta to reflect its renewed aspirations.

The strategy was developed through extensive consultation with ministries, public entities, the private sector, and citizens. Tools such as surveys, focus groups, and sentiment analysis helped shape its goals. The public will also be able to monitor the Government’s progress through transparent performance indicators.

Highlighting Gozo as a national model, Abela said it reflects the values of the Malta Vision 2050—resilience, innovation, and quality of life. Economy Minister Silvio Schembri added that over 1,800 initiatives were reviewed to shape this plan, with a shift towards measuring national success by quality of life, not just GDP.

Public consultation will continue, with more engagement opportunities available via envision2050.gov.mt.

Malta’s Wages To Soar From 93% To 135% Of EU Median Disposable Income By 2050

Malta's Wages To Soar From 93% To 135% Of EU Median Disposable Income By 2050
Apr 9 2025 Share

Malta’s wages are expected to soar from 93% to 135% of the European Union’s Median Disposable Income by the year 2050.

This was revealed as part of the Malta Vision 2050 strategy announced by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Minister Silvio Schembri during an event in Gozo.

To put things into perspective, in 2023, the figure stood at €18,900. If it were to rise to 135% TODAY, then the wage would total around  €27,500.

This would mean that, by 2050, the digits would theoretically be much higher!

That means we won’t just be catching up — we’ll be ahead of the curve.

This means that from today’s “just below average” bracket, we’re set to climb towards a future of prosperity.

Median Disposable Income isn’t just your salary. It represents the midpoint of income distribution — giving a better picture of what the typical person earns, after taxes and benefits.

Malta is also projected to land in the Top 5 EU countries for overall life experience by 2050. Right now, we sit at 13th place. Leading countries include Finland, Austria, and Slovenia.

The big push towards this progress is Malta Vision 2050 — a national strategy that’s aligning 30+ national strategies and over 1,800 initiatives under one vision.

Malta’s future progress won’t be measured just by how much we produce. Vision 2050 pushes for a wider definition of success, factoring in education, healthcare, community wellbeing, and income equality.

It’s no longer just about what we make — it’s about how we live.

Taking to social media, mayor of Valletta Olaf McKay shared a video of an individual, accompanied by another, setting a paper notice on the Valletta lift door on fire.

The video shows a hooded figure setting the paper on fire with a lighter as the other person films the act.

‘This is unacceptable’, wrote the mayor. ‘This is very dangerous and could have had serious consequences for those living in the block, some of them elderly.’

The mayor said that the act of vandalism has been reported to the police so that appropriate action is taken.
