Spinola Bay noise complaint leads to police officers assaulted

Following a noise complaint in Spinola Bay, St Julian’s, three persons were arrested for assaulting police officers investigating the case. On Saturday morning at around 3:30 am, police received a complaint on loud music being played in the Spinola Bay Area. A large group of people were found on the scene and were subsequently asked to disperse and turn off the speakers. After refusing to obey instructions, three individuals attacked the officers who tried to confiscate the sound equipment.

The two police officers on duty were taken to a medical centre, having been certified to have suffered light injuries. The assailants were all Venezuelan, with two Venezuelan men aged 31 and 24, and a woman aged 26. All three are residents of Swieqi and will be arraigned on Sunday morning in front of duty magistrate Charmaine Galea.

Mental health of youth affected due to not attending school during pandemic

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives, and the mental health of youth seems to be yet another area where the virus seems to have had its toll. Reports by the Richmond Foundation show that in July, around a third of the population was concerned about their mental health whilst just over 40% were concerned about the mental health of a relative or loved one. Psychological services were also increasingly on demand by many more people as the 1770 helpline received 3,800 calls.

The first six months of 2021 saw requests for therapeutical services increase by a whopping 70% over the same months last year. Daniela Calleja Bitar, Richmond Foundation’s chief operating officer, states that the increase was both due to awareness on mental health but also due to aggravations of conditions such as anxiety and depression. Youth who did not go to school were affected as skills linked to social interaction were drastically impacted.

Ronaldo’s Man Utd No. 7 shirt breaks record sales in 12 hours

Cristiano Ronaldo’s popular Number 7 jerseys have broken Premier League records for shirt sales within the first 12 hours of a player’s digits being made official. The number 7 kit was given up generously by Edinson Cavani, with the Portuguese player all set to don the same number with which he rose to icon status. Around £32.5 million were allegedly spent by fans within the first 12 hours.

This will not however pay back the £12.85 million fee United paid for Ronaldo to Juventus. This is because football teams do not get to keep the entire revenue generated from shirt sales. Despite being confidential, United are unlikely to keep more than 10% from the kit sales deal. Even if this really is the case, Manchester United still won’t have much of a problem to pay back Juventus given the player’s successes pushing them forward.

Cirkewwa clean up surfaces another sunken car

As yet another car was removed from South Quay, Cirkewwa, local scuba diver Raniero Borg posted to social media stating that his organisation has lost count of the amount of cars removed from this particular area.

The collaborative clean up was undertaken by NGOs Raniero’s Adventures and Zibel, along with the Malta Tourism Authority. Photos uploaded to Facebook show Raniero sitting in the algae ridden vehicle, yet another dumped into Malta’s surrounding waters.

Several cars have listed the coastal seabed around Malta, with Paradise Bay becoming a particular hot spot to litter due to the currents dragging trash from the sea. Monthly clean-ups have been organised with other NGOs by Raniero’s Adventures, with these including Zibel and No to Plastic Malta. Apart from clean-ups, Zibel also organise research and educational programmes aimed at reducing waste generated in Malta and focusing on improving the environmental context.
