Special Olympics Malta granted €420,000 in financial support from SportMalta

In a conference at the National Pool Complex in Qroqq, Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli, Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima and newly appointed President of Special Olympics Malta Lydia Abela unveiled the new agreement reached between SportMalta and Special Olympics Malta which will result in €420,000 in assistance given to Special Olympics Malta over a three year period. This investment will be there to help Special Olympics athletes in order to participate in the International Special Olympics and other training camps and programmes abroad.

Farrugia Portelli stated that this sum is a substantial increase from the usual amount granted which used to sum up to around €100,000 annually. She also recognised that Malta is giving persons with disability the opportunities to compete professionally, showcasing the belief put into the ability of these athletes.

Malta ranking higher in COVID-19 vaccination efforts

Minister for Health Chris Fearne took to Facebook to express his pride and satisfaction with the vaccination efforts taking place in Malta. Posting a graph showcasing the 7-day average per 100 people in the entire population of a country, Malta seems to rank higher than the US, UK and even the rest of the world as of March 28th 2021.

Children crying out for fewer buildings and more trees

A Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society (MFWS) survey has concluded that 61% of children are discontent with the lack of recreational space and open greenery spaces. The survey interviewed 142 children and showed that the kids were ‘crying out for fewer buildings and more trees.’

The survey was part of the foundation’s initiative titled Progett KommunitArja, a two-year consultation process involving around 900 children to gather information of how kids view the environmental and recreational situation Malta finds itself in. A 16-year-old representative named Martina Oliva stated that the study strengthened the need to improve approaches towards including green, safe recreational spaces in all localities.

Active COVID-19 cases expected to drop below 1,000 in today’s case report

The total amount of COVID-19 cases in Malta is expected to drop below 1,000 cases in today’s daily case report published by the Health Ministry.

This would be the first time that Malta has had a three-digit total case number since October 14th 2020 and may have been a result of the recently-imposed partial lockdown.

The health authorities will reportedly impose new changes to the health measures on April 11th and will hopefully pave the way towards the economy and health system’s bounce back during the summer.
