After world football authority FIFA organised football competitions around the world to observe a minute of silence to honour the late football legend Pele, Hamrun Spartans and Hibernians undertook the commemoration.

This came before a match which saw Hamrun Spartans locking in a marginal win against Hibernians, increasing their lead to the top with eleven points in the BOV Premier League.

FIFA general secretary Fatma Samoura stated in a letter to its member federations that Pele, who passed away at age 82 after a battle with colon cancer, was a ‘footballing icon like no other’.

‘In solidarity with his family and friends, the Brazilian Football Association, Brazil and all football fans who loved him so dearly, the flags at FIFA headquarters will be flown at half-mast, and FIFA calls upon all competition organisers to hold a minute of silence ahead of every football match this upcoming weekend and the week thereafter’ the letter said.

Peters won the award in the Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture category for the controversial drama by Ryan Murphy.

Family relatives of the victims stated that they were not consulted prior to the series’ release, saying how the resurgence of the killer in the pop-culture zeitgeist was re-traumatising for them.

Peters beat Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Sebastian Stan and Andrew Garfield to win the award. He went on to say that the series was a ‘colossal team effort. Everyone gave it their all and I would not be up here without them.’

‘And last but most importantly I want to thank everyone who watched the show. It was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch. But I sincerely hope some good came out of it.’

Show runner Murphy claimed that he had reached out to 20 of the victims’ family members and friends before making the new show, but ‘not a single person responded’.

Dahmer raped, murdered and cannibalised 17 young men in Wisconsin, Ohio between 1978 and 1991. He was convicted in 1992 and murdered in prison two years later at the age of 34.

Nationalist MP says Prime Minister will become dictator through new law

Nationalist MP says Prime Minister will become dictator through new law
Jan 12 2023 Share

Speaking during a parliamentary speech, Nationalist MP Eve Borg Bonello said that the cabinet has met to discuss a law which will allow Prime Minister Robert Abela to become a dictator without any checks and balances.

This was in reference to the government’s proposed changes to the Standards Commissioner law after it proposed an anti-deadlock mechanism to the Standards Commissioner bill.

This would allow the official to be appointed with a simple majority on the third round of voting. Borg Bonello compared such a bill to one proposed in Nazi Germany called the Enabling Act of 1933. This saw the German Cabinet being given the power to pass the Reichstag when passing laws.

Borg Bonello said that this occurred in Germany and with Mussolini’s Italian fascists when they worked to strip their governments from their checks and balances in regards to standards commissioners.

‘A little bit of research will immediately show you that authoritarian governments always use this recipe’ said the young MP. She went on to question whether the government intends to change any other laws by removing elections.

She urged the government to replace the bill with one that would enshrine the importance of a two-thirds parliament vote for the standards commissioner within the constitution.

This comes after the Opposition rejected former Chief Justice Joseph Azzopardi from acquiring the role without a reason for its objection.

Old Birkirkara website used for porn after domain name expired

According to Times of Malta, readers contacted the newsroom fearing that the council’s website had been hacked as the old site is currently advertising pornography.

Times of Malta reported how the website was taken over by a Chinese registered company after the old domain name was allowed to expire in early 2018. The domain was left unused for several use until it was registered on March 10th 2022 in the Hunan province, China.

The newsroom reported how the mayor of Birkirkara, Joanne Debono Grech, directed them to the council’s official government site. A Facebook post was also uploaded to the official page of Birkirkara’s local council reminding its followers that the official website is now a page on the website of the local government ministry.

When a domain is not used as a home page, a council may opt to redirect to the council’s Facebook page. This is a move adopted by the Sliema local council.
