Minister for Social Accommodation Roderick Galdes announced that the number of people waiting on the social housing list has decreased significantly since 2017. The aforementioned year saw 3,288 people on this waiting list. A 42% decrease however saw the number drop too 1,900.
Galdes stated that the ‘holistic housing system [we] created is bearing fruit and achieving progress’. The wide range of services provided by the Housing Authority is, according to Galdes, helping many people move forward. Focusing on prevention as the main factor behind the decrease of people on the waiting list, the number of applicants in 2020 went down to 238 from the 580 applications received in 2017.
This indicates the government’s providing to families, preventing their dependency upon the state and giving sufficient effective services. Rent benefit was strengthened, as pointed out by Galdes, with 2900 families living in rented acclamation ensured that they do not need to pay more than a quarter of their income on rent.
