In Kirkop, a €1.4 million social accommodation project that will house eight families was inaugurated. This project forms part of a number of social accommodation projects that will be inaugurated this year, providing families with the opportunity to begin their future under a decent roof.

These details were provided by the Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes who asserted that this underscores the Government’s commitment to prioritising the housing sector. “The housing sector is a priority for this Government, underscored by the record of projects, initiatives, and investments already announced and those yet to be announced throughout this year,” Minister Galdes stated.

Minister Galdes concluded his address by emphasising Government’s relentless efforts in the housing sector, which have resulted in a significant increase in the allocation of social housing to numerous families while the homeownership rate rose to 82% of Malta’s population.

The building will be named after the late Charles Miceli, a pioneer who devoted himself to aiding the vulnerable and afflicted.

In a major twist to Hollywood’s payroll leaderboard, Adam Sandler emerged as the highest-paid actor of 2023, despite the buzz surrounding the year of Barbenheimer.

While both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” films generated massive attention and were pivotal in defining cinema in 2023, it was Adam Sandler, known for his roles in “Happy Gilmore,” “Click,” “Uncut Gems,” “Grown Ups,” and numerous other hits, who clinched the top spot. According to Forbes, Sandler amassed an impressive $93 million, outpacing his contemporaries in earnings.

The achievement comes in a year marked by the success of the “Murder Mystery” series on Netflix, which recorded over 173 million hours of viewing on the platform, underscoring Sandler’s significant impact on both traditional and digital cinema landscapes.

While Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is tipped as the frontrunner for the Oscars this weekend, the financial spotlight shone brightly on Sandler. Following closely behind Sandler in earnings were “Barbie’s” Margot Robbie in second place, Tom Cruise in third, with Ryan Gosling and Matt Damon rounding out the top five positions at fourth and fifth, respectively.

Malta’s First COVID-19 Case Was Registered Exactly Four Years Ago

Mar 7 2024 Share

Today, Thursday, March 7th, 2024, marks four years since Malta documented its first local case of COVID-19, a moment that signalled the beginning of an unprecedented period in the country’s history.

In the months that followed this initial case, Malta, like the rest of the world, grappled with the challenges posed by the pandemic. The government implemented various measures to curb the spread of the virus, including lockdowns, social distancing guidelines, and mask mandates. These measures, while necessary for public health, had a profound impact on daily life, the economy, and the social fabric of the nation.

As businesses closed and streets emptied, the vibrancy that characterises Malta’s towns and cities, especially the bustling capital of Valletta, diminished significantly.

This drastic change in the island’s landscape is poignantly captured in a drone shot by local creator Victor Abela. His footage shows Valletta, typically a hive of activity, looking barren and deserted, serving as a stark visual reminder of the pandemic’s effect on Malta.
