Images and videos making rounds online show what seems to be an unprecedented amount of smoke and oil emerging out of a vessel Large clouds of smoke can be seen emerging out of the back end of one of the ferries. Another shows a long stream of leaked oil on the surface of the water.

The footage puts into question the environmental impact on Malta’s aquatic life and the levels of pollution being emitted. Several people are concerned about the emitted pollution, asking for the issue to be addressed.

Victor Sciriha steps down as Valletta FC president

Having been president of Valletta FC since 2013, Victor Sciriha has decided to step down from the helm of the Premier League club. The news comes after the club’s annual general meeting on Monday, with vice-president Alexander Fenech being appointed as the new president. The club posted to Facebook explaining how the now-former president feels that the time is right for him to retire from the game and to leave the administration in the hands of more energetic and enthusiastic young people.

Valletta Football Club described how Sciriha ‘enjoyed a golden era in terms of title success as the team won seven league titles, three FA trophies, the Super Cup seven times, the Euro Challenge Cup three times, the 100 League Anniversary and the Betfair Cup.’ The club expressed their eternal gratitude for all his hard work, wishing him the best for the future.

0 COVID-19 cases registered with 3 recoveries

Malta has registered 0 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,526 swab tests, while 3 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Tuesday 15th June 2021, 596,074 vaccine doses were administered of which 341,941 were 1st doses. 265,090 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,582 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,112 have recovered, 419 died and 51 are still active.

Increase in reports of domestically abused elderly in 2020

Police have received just under 200 domestic abuse reports on elderly persons in 2020, reaching a five-year high as they continue to increase. A majority include claims of psychological abuse, with 2020 having 141 such cases. There were 121 cases reported in 2016, 124 in 2017, 143 in 2018, 167 in 2019 and 194 in 2020. Spokespersons for police speaking to Times of Malta reported that some cases involve adult children scaring their elderly parents, with others concerning issues between spouses.

Financial abuse of elderly persons is also on the rise, with people receiving 122 reports of elderly people being defrauded in 2020. Other reports include crimes such as deliberate injury (81 in 2020), armed robbery, mugging and grab cases, but these have all declined. Authorities urge those in need of help to call 179, which provides immediate assistance to those seeking aid and information.
