Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) condemned the vandalistic act done on the bench commemorating victims of domestic violence and femicide.

The bench was spray painted black, desecrating the physicals structure as well as the memory of those it honours.

‘This incident continues to show the critical importance of all ongoing efforts to advocate for victims and survivors of violence.’

In 2020, the University Student Council KSU had installed the bench on the Quadrangle with the aim of raising awareness on gender-balance violence and remembering the women who fell victim to such acts.

Photographer Captures Last Night’s Rare Super Moon

Local photographer Joseph Amodio captured a stunning shot of last night’s rare sturgeon blue moon rising over the Maltese horizon behind Madliena Tower.

Last night featured a rare celestial event—a supermoon combined with a blue moon.

Supermoons occur three to four times a year when the moon is closest to Earth. What made last night special was that it was the second full moon in a single month, known as a blue moon. The next blue supermoon won’t happen until 2037.

Interestingly, due to wildfire ash in the atmosphere, the moon appeared more red than blue, giving it a dark red hue.

Additionally, it was called a “sturgeon” moon, named after the time of year when sturgeon fish are abundantly caught.

Globally, the moon looked 6.2% larger and 12.8% brighter than an average full moon.

As reported by Maltese Islands Weather, smoke from extensive fires in Canada managed to reach the central Mediterranean and, by extension, the Maltese islands.

This happened due to the smoke combining with several storm systems across the Atlantic, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

This means the smoke has travelled a whopping 8,000 kilometres across the world.

As of August 19th, there were 375 active wildfires burning with 127 out of control, across British Columbia in Canada.

According to It-Temp Madwarna, Malta received black soot from Etna eruptions, fine desert sands from African deserts and smoke from the forest fires in the American continent.
