Seventy workers who successfully participated in training organized by the Occupational Health & Safety Unit within the Public Works Department were presented today with certificates for completing courses in First Aid and a specialized course on the safe operation of Mobile Elevated Work Platforms.
The Occupational Health & Safety Unit is continuously committed to enhancing the knowledge of all workers within the Department to ensure the health and safety of the workers themselves as well as those around them are protected. These two courses are part of a series of other specialized workplace safety courses.
In a speech on the occasion, Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia emphasized the importance of worker participation in the training regularly conducted by the Department. He stated that investment should not stop with machinery but that workplace safety should be a priority.
“I am immensely satisfied to see the Department being proactive in providing our workers with every opportunity to work safely and in a secure environment. Therefore, I look forward to further strengthening this unit and ensuring that we ourselves create opportunities for our workers to improve their skills,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Farrugia.
Marfred Bugeja, Principal Health and Safety Officer within the Public Works Department, also spoke, announcing that later this year, courses will be held on the use of heavy plant machinery, including cranes, excavators, and dumpers, among others. He also explained that there are plans to organize courses on fire fighting and fire wardens.
