SensAbility Scheme Officially Renewed

Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation, Roderick Galdes, has announced the renewal of the SensAbility scheme during a press conference.

Over the past four years, an investment of around €312,000 has supported 64 families, enabling them to set up multi-sensory rooms in their homes. These specialised spaces cater to children and adults with autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and other conditions, enhancing their sensory experiences and overall well-being.

“When we launched this scheme, we emphasised its role as a holistic and dynamic policy—one that evolves with society’s needs rather than following a rigid framework. This flexible approach allows us to make meaningful decisions that lead to real improvements in people’s lives, ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunities. We firmly believe in the dignity of every individual and in fostering their abilities,” said Minister Galdes.

He further explained that the scheme offers up to €6,000 in funding, with no means test or financial eligibility criteria. Beneficiaries can tailor their multi-sensory rooms to their specific needs, incorporating a variety of stimuli designed to support personal development and sensory engagement.

“I’ve had the opportunity to speak with parents and families who have benefited from this initiative, and they’ve shared how these rooms—equipped with specialised tools—have significantly improved their loved ones’ quality of life. This is exactly what the scheme aims to achieve: putting beneficiaries first and ensuring they have a dignified and supportive environment that meets their unique needs,” the Minister concluded.

Matthew Zerafa, CEO of the Housing Authority, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to prioritising families’ needs, stating, “With our customer-centric approach, the Authority ensures that the realities and aspirations of the families we serve remain at the core of our work.”

St Aloysius College in Birkirkara, one of Malta’s oldest schools, may soon appoint its first lay rector in its 118-year history.

The school has opened applications to laypersons, diocesan priests, and religious congregations.

Fr Jimmy Bartolo, the current rector, is stepping down after 12 years, marking the first time a non-Jesuit could take on the role.

The college, founded by the Jesuit order in 1907, has educated notable figures, including prime ministers Eddie Fenech Adami, Lawrence Gonzi, Joseph Muscat, and Robert Abela.

Despite Fr Bartolo’s departure, the Jesuits will maintain a presence at the school. The rector reports to both the college board and the Jesuit legal representative. The role involves overseeing the institution’s strategy while upholding its Jesuit and Ignatian ethos

Fr Bartolo has been appointed Jesuits’ Secretary of Education and will move to Rome in January.
