Jun 7 2022 Share

A teen was kept under arrest for, among other things, evading airport security and attempting to board a plane using a Tallinja bus card.

The youth, a 22-year-old Somali in search of asylum, was taken to court accused of entering a restricted zone in the airport without authorisation, escaping police custody, causing damage to airport property and disobeying police orders.

Early Sunday morning, the accused was taken into police custody for attempting to board the plane with his Tallinja card.

Police handcuffed him to a bench to await other officials to transport him to police headquarters, but the youth suddenly got up and dragged the bench with him, causing the airport damage.

The youth allegedly also gave the police false information and did not cooperate when facing arrest. He has plead not guilty for the accusations charged and is currently still in custody.

A 33-year-old Serbian was arrested on Sunday at a swimming establishment located in Gzira. The Serbian had been wanted by the police for 4 months, after being involved in a fight with a 29-year-old Marsaskala resident on the 17th of February.

The police stated that, yesterday, they were notified that the Serbian was seen at an establishment in Gzira. As RIU officers arrived at the location to arrest the wanted man, the Serbian tried to escape and was being very violent, injuring 4 policemen in the process. The officers needed medical attention after the incident.

The whole arrest lasted a couple of minutes, with police struggling to get a hold of the man who was described as very strong. Back up had to be called and it was only then that the RIU got control of the man. The 33-year-old is now being held under arrest at the Police HQ in Floriana, while the 4 injured policemen are suffering minor injuries.
