SDM Calls For Independent Political Platform For Youth

SDM Calls For Independent Political Platform For Youth
Dec 17 2023 Share

In a new video by Studenti Demokristjani Maltin (SDM), the youth organisation announced that they are ready to offer a collaborative platform for all student organisations to voice their opinions without any political interference.

SDM explained that 1 in 3 Maltese students gave up on the two main political parties representing the population of the Maltese islands.

Worse still, youth are now viewing politics as a waste of time and are choosing to carry out their studies and their futures away from Malta.

They no longer see it as a tool which can be used for good and bring about change. Despite this sentiment, SDM believe that it is not the case that students truly no longer care about political issues.

They merely feel this way due to the partisanship associated with Maltese politics, hence the proposal for an unbiased platform which could reinvigorate the interest in politics.

Local environmental activist Raniero Borg took to social media to draw attention to a sailing boat which has been left shipwrecked at Mistra Bay for around four months.

Raniero showed close ups of the boat, saying that the machinery inside the boat still contains oil which, if let unattended, will end up going into the surrounding waters.

‘No action was taken to remove it or to find who the boat belonged to’ said Raniero, saying that if it were his boat, a daily €50 fine would be handed out for leaving it in such a state.

Borg went on to call on the relevant authorities to take responsibility and remove the boat before it causes any more damage to the ecology around it.

More US States To Make Financial Education Mandatory

More US States To Make Financial Education Mandatory

An increasing number of high schools across the United States are incorporating real-world financial lessons into their curriculum, with over half of U.S. high schoolers expected to be mandated to take a personal finance course before graduation.

Pennsylvania recently joined 24 other states in guaranteeing a personal finance course for high school students.

Starting in the fall of 2026, Pennsylvania schools will implement a mandatory personal financial literacy course for students in grades 9 through 12, following the signing of an omnibus bill by Governor Josh Shapiro.

With this legislation, more than half of U.S. high school students—53%—will have guaranteed access to a standalone personal finance course, according to Yanely Espinal, Director of Educational Outreach at Next Gen Personal Finance.

The momentum for financial education in schools has surged in 2023, with eight states adopting policies to ensure students take a personal finance course before graduating.

Wisconsin recently signed a bill requiring high school students to undergo personal finance literacy education, starting with the class of 2028. The Center for Financial Literacy at Champlain College’s latest report card indicates that seven states received an “A” grade for requiring personal finance courses for high school graduates in the class of 2023.

By 2028, when new laws are fully implemented, 25 states are projected to earn an “A,” marking significant progress in financial education policies across the nation.
