Scientists discover new drug which could end hangover effects

Scientists discover new drug which could end hangover effects

Sure, we all love to down tequila shots with our friends or share one-too many pints far after the football match has ended.

What we don’t like are the hangovers that hit us in the morning, making us vow to never drink again – a vow we’ll probably break the following weekend.

However, that drawback might soon become a thing of the past. A team of scientists from China have reportedly discovered a probiotic that could cure hangovers.

The scientists, in their attempt to reduce the damaging effects of alcohol consumption, created an oral hADH1 B-expressing probiotic to help break down the alcohol in the intestinal tract.

The researchers tested the probiotic they created on a group of intoxicated mice (we’ll set aside the ethical dilemmas for now). Before testing the probiotic, the mice were found to recover from the alcohol after six to ten hours on their own.

An hour afterwards, the mice were placed into an ‘exercise recorder’, monitoring every 15 seconds to see how quickly they recovered as some of them had ingested the probiotic.

The study found that the mice who had taken the probiotic regained their exercise capacity after around 5.5 hours, compared to the 6.4 hours of those who did not.

On quarter of the mice who took the probiotic did not lose their self-righting reflex and exercised throughout the whole process.

This means the probiotic not only reduced how much alcohol was absorbed in the body but also increased the length of time the host was able to tolerate the alcohol.

It might be a while before we start using such miracle drugs to cure our weekend bender hangovers, but the scientists from the study are hopeful that this could pave ways for new and more effective hangover aids.

We’re still a bit worried about those mice though…

Viral video shows one way signs at all exits in Fgura crossroads

Viral video shows one way signs at all exits in Fgura crossroads
Apr 16 2023 Share

A video uploaded to Facebook by user ‘Mario Camilleri Ta Sosu’ has been making the rounds showing a crossroads with all its exits blocked by one way signs.

The road, which Camilleri reveals is Triq San Mikiel Fgura, has one way signs in all of its four potential exits, even the road which Camilleri himself is walking down.

The video showcases the signs, with Camilleri posing the question: ‘where do you go out from?’

After a brief silence, leaving viewers baffled at this roadway conundrum, Camilleri comes up with his ingenious solution: introduce flying cars.

Jokes aside, the video amassed around 106K views, with people both finding the situation sad and hysterical whilst also urging authorities to address the situation.

Minister for Inclusion, Voluntary Work and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli shared an absolutely adorable video of Nando, Kayleigh and Suzie graduating to official service dogs.

These canines will be assisting three different people, some of them on the autism spectrum and others suffering from anxiety or lack of mobility.

The Service Dogs Malta Foundation said that ‘in order to get the most from these loyal companions, they need to go through extensive service dog training.’

Minister Farrugia Portelli, whose ministry for inclusion forms part of this project, praised the work done whilst celebrating 10 years of the Service Dogs Malta Foundation.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri has officially launched the Springtime in Gozo events calendar, which will see various activities held for the general public.

‘Just like anything else, Gozo comes back to life through the hustle and bustle related to so many activities being planned and organised by the Ministry for Gozo’ the Minister wrote in the official launch booklet.

A quick dive into the list of events shows that Gozitans, Maltese and tourists alike will have plenty to keep busy with on Malta’s sister island.

These include the Gozo Flower Art Festival (28th April – 1st May), the Fireworks & Gastronomy Festival (28th April), Europe Day in Gozo (29th April), theatrical and musical performances such as La Traviata on the 29th, and many, many more!

There will be wine, flowers, science, candlelight, traditional music and all you could ever think of.

‘We are confident’ said Minister Camilleri, ‘that in the coming six weeks, one will be spoiled for choice. Whilst looking forward to entertain you all this spring, we look forward to give you an even more jam-packed calendar during the summer months.’
