Scenes From Last Night's Paceville Apartment Block Collapse

An apartment block in Paceville collapsed last night, with footage and photos circulating online of the chaos that ensued.

In statements released after news broke of a apartment block collapse in St Julian’s, the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) and the Occupational Health & Safety Authority (OHSA) issued statements confirming that residents were evacuated before the collapse took place.

The BCA stated that on the 10th of June it ordered the works on the site, which was next to another building which had been demolished, to stop.

After inspections and discussions with architects involved, the decisions as taken and with then cooperation of police the residents were evacuated.

OHSA also said that inspections on the site were conducted and the same actions to ensure the safety of people were taken.

Man Injured After Fight Breaks Out In Courtroom

Yesterday, at around 11:30am, police were called in to assist during an altercation that broke out during a court hearing in one of the courtrooms.

According to investigations, the incident occurred as a 28-year-old man from St Paul’s Bay was leaving the courtroom on the court’s orders.

While exiting, he approached one of the individuals involved in the same case.

Several people present at the scene intervened immediately, along with police officers and court officials who were nearby.

The 28 year old man was promptly placed under arrest, while the other individual involved, a 49 year old man also from St Paul’s Bay, went to the nearest health centre, where he was later certified as having suffered grievous injuries.

Police investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

35 Year Old Motorcyclist Injured In Naxxar Road Accident

Yesterday, at around 1545hrs, police were informed of a traffic accident which took place on Triq John Adye, Naxxar.

Police convened immediately on site and preliminary investigations showed that a crash had taken place between a Honda motorcycle driven by a 35 year old Bosnia and Herzegovina national and resident of Għargħur and an Isuzu Rodeo driven by a 59 year old man resident of Marsa.

A medical team was called on site and the man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where he was later certified as having suffered grievous injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.
